These reservoirs could collectively store around 500,000 cubic meters of water, enough to supply the population for two days under normal usage, and considerably longer under rationed conditions.

Though not a complete solution, these reservoirs could act as a critical buffer during the dry months. The expense is estimated to be approximately USD 100 million, a high sum for a small country, but one that would undoubtedly bring returns in terms of resilience and water security.

Experts point out that infrastructure in isolation will not resolve the crisis. A multi-component response that incorporates nature-based solutions and community action must be taken. For instance, wetland restoration can be employed to increase soil water retention, and urban greening of roof gardens and permeable pavements can aid aquifer recharging. Domestic and public building rainwater harvesting and reuse systems can reduce dependence on centralized supplies.

Most household water in Mauritius is lost due to outdated plumbing. Community-led water audits, conservation awareness, and quick fixes for leaks can reduce waste.
