Imphal, June 1, 2025 — Relentless rainfall over the past three days has triggered severe flooding across Manipur, submerging large parts of Imphal Valley and other districts. The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have launched Operation Jal Rahat 2, rescuing nearly 800 civilians from flood-affected areas in Imphal East and West districts, as rivers like the Imphal River breached their banks, causing widespread waterlogging and disruption.

Operation Jal Rahat 2: A Lifeline for Flood Victims

Under Operation Jal Rahat 2, two major rescue columns were deployed to tackle the crisis. The first column, based in Singjamei, evacuated 193 people, including 85 women and 44 children, from Wangkhei Khunou in Imphal East. Another 408 individuals, comprising 137 men, 179 women, and 92 children, were rescued from other inundated areas across Imphal East and West. Troops also evacuated the flooded premises of All India Radio (AIR) Imphal, responding to an urgent request from the station’s director.

The Assam Rifles and Indian Army have provided critical humanitarian aid, distributing food, water, and essential medicines to those displaced. Temporary shelters have been set up to accommodate the affected, with authorities working tirelessly to ensure safety and relief.

Landslides Cut Off Major Highways

The floods have been compounded by landslides, which have blocked key routes, including the Imphal-Silchar National Highway (NH-37). This has paralyzed traffic and isolated several communities, making rescue and relief efforts more challenging. Areas such as Palace Compound, New Checkon, Khurai, and Heingang in Imphal have been severely waterlogged, disrupting daily life and office commutes.

Government Response and Public Concerns

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey visited flood-affected sites in Imphal East to assess the situation and oversee relief operations. The state government, in coordination with central authorities, is closely monitoring the crisis. However, the Congress party has raised concerns about the rising water levels in the Imphal River, urging immediate action to mitigate further damage.

Posts on X reflect growing public anxiety, with users reporting widespread waterlogging and calling for urgent government intervention. One user noted, “Manipur is hit by severe floods. Relief and rescue operations are underway, but the situation remains critical.”

Climate and Urbanization Challenges

Experts attribute the intensified flooding to changing rainfall patterns, rapid urbanization, and climate change. Manipur, alongside other northeastern states like Assam and Tripura, has faced unprecedented floods this year, highlighting the need for a robust disaster waste management plan. The state’s vulnerability to such disasters is likely to increase without sustainable urban planning and environmental measures.

Ongoing Efforts and Future Outlook

As the monsoon season continues, the fear of further flooding persists. Authorities are working to clear blocked highways and provide sustained relief to affected communities. The central government previously allocated ₹675 crore to flood-hit states, including Manipur, to support recovery efforts following heavy rainfall earlier in 2024.

Natural Disaster Flood Calamity Helpline Number Manipur

Operation Jal Rahat 2 remains a beacon of hope for thousands in Manipur, with the Indian Army and Assam Rifles continuing their relentless efforts to save lives and restore normalcy. The state now looks to both immediate relief and long-term strategies to combat the growing threat of climate-driven disasters.
