Soldiers in lifeboats carried people to safety in Tripura after torrential rains caused floods in Tripura, dislocating over 10,000 people and killing two Jawans. Army men ran rescue craft as automobiles and buses became stuck in knee-deep water on the streets. According to disaster management officials, four days of incessant rain have swollen rivers, aggravating the problem and leading to floods in Tripura.
According to the Indian army, two columns from the 18 Assam Rifles, led by HQ 21 Sector Assam Rifles and IGAR (East), have been located across the flood-affected areas of Amarpur, Bhampur, Bishalgarh, and Ramnagar in the state as part of operation ‘Jal Rahat’.
According to officials, the displaced have assembled in 450 camps, with an average 1.7 million people influenced. Substantial harm has also been done to infrastructure, crops, and livestock.
Landslides lead to the majority of deaths. However, some were due to the collapse of mud walls and drowning, according to another disaster management official.
As per the army, more than 80 members of its military accompanied in the rescue measures, taking 334 persons stuck in rising floodwaters to safety.
The Gomati River is still flowing at 22.30 meters, which exceeds the extreme danger criterion of 22 meters. The state authority has relocated all families living along its banks in Amarpur, Udaipur, Sonamura, and nearby villages. The state government has asked all inhabitants to remain alert until the water level returns to normal.
According to officials and witnesses, the Gomti River smashed through a barrier late Thursday, causing floods in Tripura and displacing hundreds of households.
According to authorities, more than 75,000 people were evacuated to over 1,500 shelters in flood-damaged districts, with military and border guards assisting in the rescue.
The infrastructure has been severely damaged, with roads, bridges, and critical services such as electricity and water delivery disrupted. Housing has also suffered significantly: around 1,396 dwellings have been partially damaged, 184 buildings have been completely pulled down, and 368 houses have been badly affected, leaving many people homeless and in desperate need of shelter. The situation could be better in South Tripura, Gomati, and Unakoti districts.
The torrential rainfall has caused landslides in over 2,032 spots across the state, leading to significant road closures and hampering relief efforts. Although restoration efforts are in progress, road erosion has occurred at 1,952 locations, with repairs completed at 579. The electrical infrastructure has also experienced substantial damage, with 844 broken poles, 151 faulty transformers, and 310 kilometres of wires destroyed. Two substations are out of order, enhancing the problems caused by the affected areas.
There have also been connectivity issues, with bus services from Nagerjala bus depot, Radhanagar bus terminal, and Chandrapur Inter-State Bus terminal (ISBT) momentarily suspended. Train services from Agartala have been stopped, and the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) has cancelled eight local trains connecting Agartala to Udaipur in Gomati district and Sabroom in South Tripura district due to landslides and floods in Tripura.
