The king cobra, the world’s longest venomous snake, has long been classified as a single species. However, subsequent scientific advances have shifted this perception. A recent study led by P. Gowri Shankar, a researcher who has researched king cobras for nearly 20 years, has reclassified the species into four separate species. These species of King Cobra, Reclassified into 4 Species, are found in various locales, including Mainland Asia, the majority of Maritime Southeast Asia, India’s Western Ghats, and the Philippines’ northern island of Luzon.
This significant discovery builds on previous research conducted by the same team in 2021, which found “four geographically separate lineages as confirmed candidate species (CCS).” These lineages include a Western Ghats species from India, a widespread Asian mainland species, a Malesian species found on the Malay Peninsula and in parts of the Philippines, and an isolated lineage from Luzon Island. The present study provides a formal taxonomic revision of the genus Ophiophagus, identifying two lineages as new species. This reclassification has far-reaching consequences for snake conservation, snake bite management, and future king cobra studies.

Taxonomy and Naming of the King Cobra
The king cobra was first scientifically identified in 1836 by Danish naturalist Theodore Edward Cantor. The species was formerly named Ophiophagus hannah, and the genus name “Ophiophagus” means “snake eater” in Greek, reflecting the snake’s diet of other snakes. However, the origin of the species “Hannah” was unknown for many years. Kraig Adler of Cornell University hypothesised in 2016 that “Hannah” was an eponym for Hannah Sarah Wallich, the daughter of Nathaniel Wallich, a noted botanist who hosted Cantor in India.
Since Cantor’s categorisation, the king cobra’s taxonomy has remained primarily unaltered despite significant geographic changes across its habitat. The lack of sufficient comparative material and the difficulties of overlapping squamation (scale patterns) contributed to the delay in recognising the distinctness of these lineages. The current study investigated conserved king cobra materials and analysed their physical characteristics, formally identifying four unique species.
The King Cobra Reclassified into 4 Species:
- Northern King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah): The first newly discovered species preserves its old name, Ophiophagus hannah. This species ranges from Pakistan to northern India, the eastern Himalayas, and Southeast Asia. The study has identified a neotype specimen from Kolkata, India, to help define the species’ taxonomic classification. This northern king cobra can be found in Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar, along China’s coast, including Hong Kong.
- Sunda King Cobra (Ophiophagus bungarus): The second species, the Sunda king cobra, lives south of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand, Malaysia, and parts of Indonesia, including Sumatra, Borneo and Java. Bungarus may refer to morphological or behavioural characteristics shared with kraits, another venomous snake genus. This species primarily inhabits tropical rainforests.
- Western Ghats King Cobra (Ophiophagus kaalinga): The third species, Western Ghats King Cobra (Ophiophagus kaalinga), is found only in the Western Ghats in southwestern India. Ophiophagus kaalinga is found in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. “Kaalinga” derives from the Kannada language and alludes to the snake’s dark colour. This species prefers mid-elevation rainforests and has a very restricted distribution, rendering it sensitive to habitat loss.
- Luzon King Cobra (Ophiophagus salvation): The fourth species, the Luzon King Cobra (Ophiophagus salvation), is named after the Philippine island of Luzon. The name “salvation” is derived from the Tagalog word for king cobra. This species is restricted to Luzon Island, and its exact relationships with king cobras on other Philippine islands are still being investigated.

Implications for Conservation and Snake Bite Management
The categorisation of king cobras as four separate species has important conservation implications. Since some of these species live in biodiversity hotspots such as the Western Ghats and Luzon, their conservation status must be urgently assessed. Habitat loss, human encroachment, and illegal poaching for skin, food, and medicine are all severe challenges to their survival. The Western Ghats and Luzon king cobras, whose populations are already falling, are particularly important to protect.
Furthermore, this reclassification may improve the management of snakebite cases. King cobra bites, while uncommon, can be fatal due to the massive amounts of venom delivered during an attack. Identifying the species that cause envenomation could lead to developing more effective antivenoms and treatment procedures, thereby saving lives. This study is an important step towards better understanding and safeguarding one of the world’s most iconic but elusive snake species.
