Ice cores from the Tundra are taken as samples for scientific research. These are collected, analyzed, and then studied and monitored to reveal past atmospheric conditions, indicating permafrost levels; exploring the impact of rising temperatures on ice sheets and ecosystems can provide greater insight into the Earth’s climatic past.

Monitoring the species’ responses to changing environmental conditions can also be used as indicators of global warming.
