According to Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, India’s solar capacity soared by 4000% in a decade. Goyal praised the nation’s renewable energy milestone of 227 gigawatts (GW) in a virtual speech during India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025, which took place in Delhi from July 8 to July 10, 2025. He pointed out that India is likely to be the first G20 country to meet its nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement. India’s dedication to sustainable energy is demonstrated by this impressive expansion, which was fuelled by a 38-fold increase in solar photovoltaic (PV) module capacity and a 21-fold increase in PV cell capacity.
Manufacturing Boom and Self-Reliance

Piyush Goyal underlined the necessity of adopting cutting-edge technology and diversifying supply chains for essential minerals to increase resilience against global disruptions. By reducing reliance on particular areas, this strategic change seeks to maintain a steady supply of resources needed for energy production. To attain 24/7 renewable energy and the ambitious 500 GW target by 2030, Goyal urged stakeholders to concentrate on the whole energy value chain, which includes mineral mining, cell components, storage solutions, and recycling. This all-encompassing strategy propels economic and environmental advancement by encouraging innovation, enhancing domestic capabilities, and establishing India as a global leader in sustainable energy.

Progress and Challenges Ahead
Speaking at IESW 2025, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar disclosed that, as of June 2025, non-fossil sources will account for 235.7 GW of India’s 472 GW total generation capacity, bringing the country closer to the 50% renewable energy milestone. Grid stability and sustainable energy availability are now made possible by the dramatic drop in energy storage costs, which went from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per megawatt per month. There are still obstacles to overcome, such as growing hydro-pumped storage capacity from 5 GW to 50 GW in five to six years and scaling battery energy storage systems from 205 MW to 74 GW by 2031–2022. India’s determination to overcome these obstacles and phase out coal domination is demonstrated by initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to generate 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen and 60–100 GW of electrolyser capacity with a budget of Rs 19,744 crore.
