In the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh declared that India’s Bharat Forecast System (BharatFS) has recently been introduced and has transformed weather forecasting by increasing the accuracy of predictions for heavy rains by 30%. This locally developed technology, which provides accurate and localized forecasts, places India as a global leader in high-resolution weather modeling. BharatFS, which is in line with the “Make in India” campaign, helps farmers, water management, and disaster response teams by utilizing state-of-the-art technology and supercomputing breakthroughs.
Advanced Technology for Unmatched Precision
Real-time forecasts at a 6 km horizontal resolution are made possible by India’s Bharat Forecast System using the novel Triangular Cubic Octahedral (TCo) dynamical grid, which is a significant advance over the 12 km resolution of the preceding GFS T1534 model. This jump is greater than the majority of global models, which usually function at 9–14 km. Local weather patterns are well captured by the system’s high resolution, especially in intricate landscapes like the Western Ghats and the Himalayas.
For areas of India that depend on the monsoon, research indicates a 30% improvement in forecasting extreme rainfall events. To provide timely and valuable insights, India’s supercomputing facilities, Arka (IITM, Pune) and Arunika (NCMRWF, Noida), have also cut prediction runtimes from 12 hours to 3–6 hours.

Empowering Local Communities and Regional Leadership
BharatFS provides farmers with accurate information for crop planning, irrigation, and harvesting by providing hyper-localized forecasts at the panchayat cluster level. During the monsoon season, water managers can reduce the risk of flooding by optimizing reservoir operations. BharatFS, which was created by teams from the India Meteorological Department, NCMRWF-Noida, and IITM-Pune, embodies the Atmanirbhar Bharat concept. Its domestic design strengthens India’s position in regional climate science by lowering dependency on foreign models and allowing it to provide meteorological assistance to other nations. Dr. Singh underlined that this accomplishment strengthens India’s economic, strategic, and scientific autonomy in weather forecasting.
As the only system that provides real-time projections with such accuracy, BharatFS sets a global standard by functioning at an unprecedented resolution. In addition to protecting lives and livelihoods, this development demonstrates India’s increasing capacity for scientific innovation.
