India promotes sustainable living and green jobs at the UN Summit “Summit of the Future” in New York, and it has restated its global leadership on climate change. The Indian delegation, steered by Leena Nandan, Secretary of the Union Environment Ministry, underlines the importance of sustainable living as a remarkable approach to combating climate change.

Nandan’s message focussed on the urgent requirement for global changes in lifestyles, predicting a scenario in which usual acts can significantly hamper climate mitigation. The summit, which assembled world leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, gave a forum for dealing with the world’s most critical issues, especially mindful of rising climate-related disasters.

Global Cooperation and Practical Solutions to Climate Action

As India promotes sustainable living and green jobs at the UN Summit, discussions concentrated on multilateral cooperation, emphasising the significance of labelling climate-related obstacles. Nandan stated that while technological advancements and carbon reduction initiatives are mandatory, success relies on giving inexpensive and practical solutions that attract the general public. “We are more likely to succeed if we offer affordable solutions, not simply impose decisions,” Nandan said, foregrounding the significance of inclusivity in climate policy.

Mission LiFE

A two-minute video on LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) was shown during the opening remarks. Union Secretary Ms Leena Nandan explained that the video aimed to encapsulate India’s holistic approach to tackling climate change. She emphasized that LiFE, a key initiative introduced by the Prime Minister at COP-26, reflects this philosophy.

Ms Nandan highlighted that Mission LiFE, launched globally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2022, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in attendance, is being implemented both in India and internationally under the guidance of Union Cabinet Minister for Environment Shri Bhupender Yadav. She further noted that Mission LiFE encourages a shift toward eco-friendly habits and sustainable lifestyles, contributing significantly to the achievement of SDG12 by promoting sustainable consumption practices.

Education and Grassroots Initiatives are Key Drivers

India’s statement at the summit beat the importance of education and grassroots activities in elevating sustainable living. Nandan hailed India’s eco-club project, which bridges over a million schools nationwide, as a model for developing environmental awareness among youngsters. These clubs motivate students to be involved in eco-friendly behaviours, guiding the future generation to be environmental stewards in the face of growing ecological risks.

Nandan also focused on the association between education and developing economic aspects. She quoted India’s expanding clean energy sector, gauging it may generate 30 to 35 million jobs by 2047. This innovative approach marked how India wants to coalesce economic growth with environmental sustainability, pledging a green and prosperous future.

Finally, India is laying the groundwork for global climate action by promoting sustainable living, focusing on education, and preparing for a green economy. The country’s leadership in these sectors exemplifies the transformative power of including environmental consciousness into daily life and a long-term approach.
