According to the sixth edition of the Global Electricity Review published on Tuesday by the think tank Ember, India becomes 3rd-Largest Wind & Solar power producer in 2024, marking a significant milestone for global sustainability. This accomplishment highlights India’s quick shift to clean energy, as 10% of the nation’s electricity is generated by solar and wind combined. In 2024, these renewable energy sources produced 15% of the world’s electricity, signaling a significant change in the energy environment. According to the research, 40.9% of the world’s electricity comes from low-carbon sources, such as nuclear and renewable energy, which hasn’t been accomplished since the 1940s. Clean energy sources accounted for 22% of India’s electrical mix, with hydropower accounting for the largest share at 8% and wind and solar combined at 10%. Due to these advancements, India is now a major actor in the global battle against climate change.

The Solar Revolution and India’s Ambitious Targets

An incredible surge in solar power, which has become the world’s largest and fastest-growing source of new electricity for the 20th consecutive year, has fueled the expansion of India’s renewable energy sector. An astounding 474 terawatt hours (TWh) of solar energy were added globally in 2024. India contributed substantially by adding 24 gigawatts (GW) of solar power, more than double the amount contributed in 2023. This resulted in the fourth-largest growth in solar power globally, adding 20 TWh, and propelled India to the third-largest solar market, behind only China and the US. India’s solar power generation increased to 7% of its electricity mix in just three years, following a global trend in which solar’s proportion reached 6.9%.“Solar power has become the engine of the global energy transition,” Phil MacDonald, Managing Director of Ember, stressed. This is especially true when combined with battery storage, which promises to meet growing electricity demands sustainably.

According to India’s 2022 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the UNFCCC, by 2030, half of its installed electric power capacity must come from non-fossil fuels. Although it is not explicitly included in the new NDCs, the nation has set a goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by the same year, which is still a key component of national energy planning. But there are many obstacles to overcome.

Supported by an open dataset spanning 88 nations, the Ember research provides a roadmap for this change, highlighting the vital role solar and renewable energy sources will play in creating a more environmentally friendly future.
