IMD issued a heat wave alert for Northern India that will last until April 18, 2025, for Delhi and several northern regions. As part of a national alert, this advice warns of rising temperatures that could cause disruptions to everyday living and provide health hazards. Residents of Gujarat and Northwest India are advised to take precautions against heat-related ailments, remain hydrated, and avoid direct sunlight as hot weather is predicted. The forecast highlights the varied and dramatic weather patterns now sweeping the country, from scorching temperatures in the north to thunderstorms in the south and east.
Severe Heat Wave to Impact Multiple Regions
IMD issued a heat wave alert for Northern India, which is predicted to start over portions of Gujarat and Northwest India on April 15, according to the IMD. In particular, it is anticipated that West Rajasthan will see isolated heat wave conditions on April 14 and 15, with isolated pockets experiencing severe heat wave conditions on April 16 and 18. Between April 15 and April 17, isolated locations in Gujarat will likely have similar situations. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, East Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh are also under the warning. On April 18, extreme heat wave conditions are predicted for portions of East Rajasthan. These forecasts are based on atmospheric patterns, such as a trough from central Assam to the West Central Bay of Bengal and upper air cyclonic circulations across northeast Assam and north Bangladesh. Residents in northern India face a challenging environment due to these conditions, which are intensifying the heat.
According to the IMD, on days when heat waves are at their worst, daytime temperatures in the impacted areas may rise beyond 40°C, with some locations perhaps reaching 45°C. To reduce the danger of dehydration and heatstroke, authorities encourage people to wear light clothing, limit outdoor activity between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and ensure they drink enough water. Public health programs are also being launched to increase awareness of heat exhaustion symptoms, especially for vulnerable populations, including children and older people.

Different Weather Patterns in India
Other regions of India face different weather conditions as the north prepares for extreme heat. Over the next week, the IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall scattered to fairly widespread across the northeastern and eastern states, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Jharkhand is predicted to get isolated hailstorms on April 15, and Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh on April 12. In the upcoming days, there is a chance of scattered rain and thunderstorms with winds of 40 to 50 kmph in southern states such as Rayalaseema, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam.
The country’s diverse weather highlights India’s intricate climatic changes over this time. Rainfall may provide some respite for southern and eastern inhabitants from the north’s oppressive heat, but thunderstorms also present concerns. From managing flood risks in rain-prone areas to guaranteeing water supply in heat-affected areas, the IMD’s proactive warnings help local authorities prepare for possible effects. Awareness and alertness are still essential for national public safety when temperatures rise and weather patterns change.
