IMD forecasts unseasonal rainfall and thunderstorms in Gujarat through May 9, attributing the weather conditions to a cyclonic circulation above southeast Rajasthan and a north-south trough extending to southern Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the weather pattern will likely become more intense starting May 5.

IMD Forecasts Unseasonal Rainfall and Thunderstorms in Gujarat

The IMD foretells light to moderate rainfall in several districts, with an increase in intensity over the coming days. By May 6, the rains are anticipated to spread to the majority of the state, including Central and South Gujarat.

With temperatures in many places over 40°C, the rain is expected to provide respite from the current heatwave-like conditions. Over the following five days, the department anticipates a 2 to 4 degrees Celsius reduction in the state’s maximum temperatures.

Thunderstorms, Hail, and Strong Winds Expected

The IMD has issued a warning that isolated locations may see hailstorms on May 5 and 6. On May 7 and 8, heavy rain will fall in North Gujarat, South Gujarat, and coastal Saurashtra. These conditions might endanger standing crops and interfere with daily life.

Moderate thunderstorms with lightning, rain, and wind gusts of 30 to 40 kmph (with the potential to reach 50 kmph) are predicted for Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Anand, Kheda, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, and the Dangs on May 5.

Additionally, the districts of Surendranagar, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, Dwarka, and Botad in Saurashtra are anticipated to be affected. A warning zone has been established for the Union Territory of Diu. There is also a chance of light to moderate rain, lightning, and strong gusts in Daman and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

Precautionary Measures and Affected Regions

Mehsana, Aravalli, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Tapi, Valsad, and Navsari are among the districts that are likely to be impacted. Additionally, parts of Kutch and Saurashtra are on alert.

The IMD has advised local authorities and citizens to exercise caution and take the appropriate safety measures in light of the shifting weather patterns. As the IMD forecasts unseasonal rainfall and thunderstorms in Gujarat, the statement highlights the need to protect infrastructure, animals, and crops. It emphasizes the possibility of interruptions due to rain, hail, and severe winds.
