Hurricane Helene made historic landfall along Florida’s coast on Thursday night, wreaking havoc as a Category 4 hurricane. With maximum sustained winds of 225 kph, the storm threatened to devastate vast parts of the Gulf Coast with ferocious winds, severe storm surges, and heavy rainfall. According to the USA National Hurricane Centre, Helene was around 70 km east-southeast of Tallahassee, Florida, late Thursday.

Helene rapidly formed earlier in the week and gained power over the warm Gulf seas. The storm’s surge, a wall of seawater pushed inland by its winds, was anticipated to reach 20 feet (6.1 meters) in some places. This surge severely threatened coastal and low-lying districts, with Wakulla County Sheriff Jared Miller encouraging residents to evacuate immediately, saying, “This is not a survivable event for those in coastal or low-lying areas.”
As the hurricane neared, governors in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, and Alabama issued emergency declarations. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis emphasised the importance of evacuation in northern Florida, warning citizens about severe floods, road closures, and power disruptions. While Helene was expected to diminish after impact, its rapid movement meant its consequences might be far-reaching. The governor observed, “You’re going to have hurricane-force winds for probably 50 miles outside the eye of the storm, and then you’re going to continue to see surge, particularly in that Big Bend area.”

Helene’s Potential for Unprecedented Destruction
The mayor of Tallahassee, John Dailey, claimed that Helene could be the most powerful hurricane that could directly affect the city. He passed an advisory about “unprecedented damage like nothing we have ever experienced before as a community.” Helene’s impact was already experienced in sections of Florida before it made landfall, with storm surges hampering Fort Myers Beach and Tampa earlier in the day.
Meteorologists and climate experts have warned that Hurricane Helene made a historic landfall and is becoming more drastic because of global warming. While no single hurricane can be linked to climate change, rising ocean temperatures are fuelling more powerful and frequent storms. Helene got much of its power from the Gulf of Mexico’s hot waters, which have recently hit record-high temperatures. According to Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert at Colorado State University, Helene is expected to be one of the largest hurricanes in years. Since 1988, only three storms in the Gulf of Mexico have been more significant than Helene: Irma (2017), Wilma (2005), and Opal (1995).
After landfall, Helene was anticipated to travel across the southern coast of the United States, with severe storm warnings in effect from Florida to North Carolina. North Carolina’s mountains were prepared for catastrophic floods as emergency officials warned citizens to seek higher ground. Henderson County’s emergency services director, Jimmy Brissie, emphasised the extraordinary severity of the projected flooding, saying, “We’re seeing flooding where we have never seen it before.”
Helene’s International Impact
While the greatest risk was to the southeastern United States, Helene had already made its mark in the Caribbean and Central America. As the hurricane swept through Cuba, it knocked off power to nearly 230,000 people, forcing them to move out from the flood-prone areas. Earlier this week, Hurricane Helene caused floods and tree damage in Cancún, a major tourist destination on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
Helene is the seventh named storm since the Atlantic hurricane season began in June. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted an above-average hurricane season due to record-high ocean temperatures. The storm’s quick growth is a strict warning of the developing threats posed by climate-driven extreme weather events.
