Bermuda braces for Hurricane Ernesto, a powerful Category 2 storm, as it approaches the North Atlantic island with potentially devastating consequences. Forecasters are warning of severe weather conditions, including flooding, storm surges, and high winds, expected to begin on Friday, just ahead of the storm’s anticipated arrival within the next 24 hours.

As of Friday morning, Hurricane Ernesto was located about 310 miles southwest of Bermuda, moving at a speed of 13 mph. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a hurricane warning for the entire island, advising residents to take immediate precautions to protect life and property. With winds exceeding 100 mph and heavy rainfall expected to reach up to 15 inches, Bermuda faces significant risks of coastal flooding and destructive storm surges.

Hurricane Ernesto’s powerful winds extend 70 miles from its center, with tropical storm-force winds reaching as far as 265 miles away. The NHC has stressed the urgency of completing all necessary preparations as the storm intensifies on its approach.

The center of Hurricane Ernesto is expected to pass near or directly over Bermuda on Saturday, with the possibility of further strengthening before it arrives. The NHC predicts that Ernesto will maintain its intensity throughout the weekend, posing a sustained threat to the island. In addition to the immediate dangers posed by the hurricane, significant coastal flooding and large, destructive waves are anticipated, particularly in areas experiencing onshore winds.

Residents and authorities in Bermuda have been urged to stay informed and heed all warnings as the storm nears. The NHC has also cautioned that the effects of Ernesto could extend beyond Bermuda, with swells reaching as far as the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Bahamas, and the U.S. East Coast. These swells may generate dangerous surf conditions and life-threatening rip currents along the coasts, particularly as the storm moves through the weekend.

Before nearing Bermuda, Hurricane Ernesto had already left a trail of disruption in Puerto Rico, where about half of the island’s 1.4 million energy customers were without power on Wednesday, despite the storm not making direct landfall. The disruption in Puerto Rico underscores the potential impact of Ernesto as it heads toward Bermuda, with similar or even more severe consequences possible.

In addition to the local warnings, the NHC’s advisories have been echoed by National Weather Service offices along the U.S. East Coast, including in Mount Holly, Pennsylvania. Beachgoers in these areas are being warned of the heightened risks of hazardous surf and rip currents due to the hurricane’s influence. Lifeguards and local authorities are advising the public to stay out of the water and to remain vigilant as the storm’s effects are felt along the coast.

As Bermuda prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Ernesto, the island’s residents are urged to take all necessary precautions and stay informed through official channels to ensure their safety during this dangerous storm. The potential for widespread flooding, destructive winds, and dangerous waves makes this a critical time for the island and surrounding regions.
