Hundreds of sinkholes emerged in Turkey’s farmland as a silent but dramatic transformation unfolded across the country’s central agricultural heartland. Fertile fields in Konya province’s Karapinar district that once consistently produced wheat, sugar beet, and maize are now marred by large holes in the earth. Scientists and farmers caution that these sinkholes are not isolated geological oddities but rather obvious signs of unchecked groundwater extraction, climate stress, and worsening drought. The land itself is crumbling as rainfall decreases and subterranean water supplies recede at startling rates, posing serious concerns about long-term environmental resilience, food security, and safety.

Climate Change, Drought, and a Collapsing Landscape
Although sinkholes have long been a possibility in the Konya basin, researchers are concerned by the speed and scope of recent developments. Fetullah Arik, a geology professor at Konya Technical University, claims that during the past ten years, the number of sinkholes has increased dramatically to around 700. Hundreds of sinkholes have emerged in Turkey’s farmland because prolonged drought since the early 2000s has steadily reduced groundwater levels.
Key drivers behind this phenomenon include:
- Declining rainfall: The natural replenishment of aquifers is limited by decreased precipitation.
- Rapid groundwater depletion: Compared to roughly half a meter per year twenty years ago, water tables are currently dropping by 4 to 5 meters per year.
- Geological vulnerability: When subterranean cavities lose water support, the basin’s limestone-rich structure is likely to collapse.
Ancient sinkholes that once held water year-round have nearly dried up in the hilly hills surrounding Karapinar, demonstrating the extent and severity of the hydrological stress.
Growing Human Risk and Farming Pressure
Farmers must dig deeper, often illegally, to maintain crops as the drought worsens. A risky feedback loop has been produced as a result. The approximately 40,000 legal wells in the basin are vastly outnumbered by the approximately 120,000 unlicensed wells, according to Arik. Every new well accelerates groundwater depletion, increasing the risk of unexpected land collapse. Hundreds of sinkholes emerge in Turkey’s farmland not only because of climate forces, but also due to this unchecked human response to water scarcity.
The dangers are no longer hypothetical. In just two years, farmer Mustafa Sik has seen two sinkholes appear on his property. While his brother was working nearby in August 2024, the ground fell way with what Sik called an “extremely loud, terrifying rumbling sound.” Other high-risk areas on his land were later identified through geological assessments, but specialists are unable to predict when they will collapse.
