When painting walls in bathrooms and kitchens, look for zero-VOC, breathable paints that alter the wall’s surface chemistry to help inhibit growth. You could also choose lime- or silicate-based paints with a high pH, which is naturally inhospitable to mold spores.

In damp-prone areas, like basements, a hard-surface flooring is a better long-term solution than carpet, which can trap moisture. Cork, bamboo, recycled rubber, stone tile,s or engineered reclaimed wood are good options, although the latter will need a vapor barrier and careful installation.

Cleaning Early Mold With Nontoxic Solutions

Small spots of surface mold should be addressed promptly, before the problem escalates. An effective natural cleaning solution can be made with white vinegar and tea tree oil.

  • Obtain an empty, clean spray bottle.
  • Wear gloves and a mask for your protection.
  • In the bottle, combine two cups of white vinegar and two teaspoons of tea tree oil.
  • Shake well and then spray the solution onto the affected area.
  • Wait for an hour and then scrub, if needed, or wipe clean.
  • Put the waste cloths in a sealed plastic bag and dispose of them in your outdoor trash bin.

The acid in the vinegar and the antifungal properties of the tea tree oil work well together. However, this method is only suitable for small areas. If you find mold covering more than a 10-square-foot patch, you should seek professional help. You should also not attempt to handle mold resulting from a sewage leak.
