As a person interested in sustainable living, I have been trying to retrofit my house to be energy-efficient for many years now. Over time, I have tried various strategies that have worked to some extent and others that have not worked at all, and thus, I have gained a lot of experience. 1. Conducting an Energy Audit: The First Step to Understanding Your Home’s Needs

Before exploring energy-saving solutions, the first thing I did was perform an energy audit of my property. This helped illuminate the greatest areas of loss. An energy audit provides a comprehensive assessment of your home’s energy use while reviewing which portions of your home to prioritize in your plan.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says, A typical home loses about 25% to 30% of its heating and cooling energy through its windows.Professional energy audits cost between $200 and $600, but saving hundreds of dollars without compliance is also worth the cost of assistance in finding which defects have the greatest impact on energy usage. Once I implemented changing incandescent bulbs to LED, I was quickly convinced my avocation was warranted due to the impact seen on my monthly electric bill.

6. Sealing Air Leaks: A Low-Cost Fix with High Returns

I was shocked to find that simply repairing small cracks and openings around windows, doors, and plumbing can account for as much as 20-25% of heating/cooling loss! I filled cracks around the window frames and added weather stripping around my doors for very affordable home improvement.

With less than $100 in supplies, I cooled my home more effectively and felt more comfortable, in addition to reducing my energy bills. The method is very low-cost and has HUGE returns! The DOE even acknowledges that sealing air leaks is one of the most cost-effective ways to conserve energy.

7. Upgrading Appliances to ENERGY STAR Models

Probably the most extensive and most challenging endeavour I took in terms of energy efficiency was going solar. I agree that the initial cost is discouraging but the availability of tax credits and declining cost of installation made it possible There was about 5-15 years of payback period but the monthly energy saving and satisfaction of having renewable energy source was fulfilling.

According to studies, an average home in the U.S. can cut its electricity bill by about $1,500 per year with solar power. Additionally, most states have net metering laws, whereby homeowners can feed excess energy back into the grid and earn extra bucks on their electricity bills, which is another plus for cost.
