Chikungunya Cases Rise After South China Floods
The floods in China have compounded a growing chikungunya outbreak, especially in Foshan, which has reported over 7,000 cases, the largest outbreak for China in a decade since 2008. The chikungunya virus, which is transmitted to humans via Aedes mosquitoes, causes a fever, rashes, and debilitating joint pain. In addition to Foshan, it has now spread to 12 other cities in Guangdong, as well as Hong Kong and Macau.
