Google launches AlphaEarth Foundations, an AI model under its EarthAI initiative, to transform global environmental monitoring. It was officially launched on July 30, 2025, and serves as a de facto virtual satellite. It utilizes large-scale Earth observation datasets to improve the mapping of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems. It is a vital tool for climate resilience because it supports a broad range of applications, especially in fields like food security, land monitoring, urban planning, and water management.

A New Era of AI for the Planet

This geospatial AI model analyzes petabytes of multimodal data, such as:

  • Optical and radar satellite imagery
  • 3D LiDAR (laser scanning)
  • Climate simulation data

AlphaEarth Foundations divides the Earth into 10×10-meter blocks, creating compact, high-fidelity data summaries called embeddings. These embeddings represent physical and environmental features with exceptional precision.

Key Performance Highlights:

  • 16× lower storage requirements than alternative systems
  • 24% reduced error, besides being effective when only small amounts of training data are available

This degree of efficiency enables scalable, real-time analysis of global environmental changes.

Global Reach and Early Impact

Over 50 institutions, including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Stanford University, and Harvard Forest, have already tested AlphaEarth Foundations. Use cases range from ecosystem classification to deforestation alerts.

Notable Deployments

  • Brazil’s MapBiomas tracks Amazonian change. Founder Tasso Azevedo said the tool enables “faster, more accurate” mapping.
  • James Cook University’s Global Ecosystems Atlas uses it to identify previously unmapped ecosystems. Nick Murray, project lead, called it “revolutionary for conservation planning.”

The model is accessible via Google Earth Engine through the newly released Satellite Embedding dataset.
