A recent report by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) has raised concerns about the pace of global wind energy expansion, highlighting that it is not keeping up with the ambitious net-zero targets set for 2030.​ In 2024, the global wind industry achieved a record installation of 117 gigawatts (GW), surpassing the previous year’s 116.6 GW. This growth was primarily driven by onshore wind projects, which accounted for 109 GW, while offshore wind contributed 8 GW. China led the way with nearly 80 GW of new capacity, followed by the United States with approximately 4.1 GW. This brings the total global wind capacity to 1,136 GW. ​

Shortfall in Meeting Net-Zero Goals

Despite this record growth, the GWEC report emphasizes that the current expansion rate falls significantly short of the 320 GW annual increase required to meet the United Nations’ target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. The report also notes that the wind industry needs to install 532,000 new technicians by 2028 to meet the growing demand, with 40% of these roles needing to be filled by newcomers.

Challenges Hindering Progress

Several factors are contributing to the slower-than-expected growth in wind energy:

• Policy Instability: Uncertainty in government policies, particularly in major markets like the United States, has created an unpredictable environment for investors and developers.​

• Permitting and Grid Infrastructure Issues: Delays in obtaining necessary permits and inadequate grid infrastructure are slowing down the deployment of new wind projects.​

• Trade Tensions: Ongoing trade conflicts, especially U.S. tariff uncertainties, have disrupted supply chains and increased costs for wind energy projects.

The Path Forward for Global Wind Energy Expansion

To accelerate the growth of wind energy and align with net-zero targets, the GWEC report calls for:​

• Streamlining Permitting Processes: Simplifying and expediting the approval processes for new wind projects to reduce delays.​

• Investing in Grid Infrastructure: Enhancing grid capacity and flexibility to accommodate the increasing share of wind energy.​

• Promoting Policy Stability: Implementing consistent and supportive policies that encourage investment in wind energy.​

The report concludes that while the wind industry is on course for exponential growth, concerted efforts are needed to overcome existing challenges and meet the global climate goals set for 2030.
