The United Nations has warned that Global Temperatures are expected to stay above average despite the return of La Niña, between September and November this year. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said that even with La Niña’s cooling effect, human-driven climate change continues to drive record heat.
La Niña is a natural climate pattern that cools sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. It often triggers opposite weather conditions to El Niño, such as bringing rainfall to some regions while causing droughts in others.
According to the WMO, there is a 55% chance of La Niña forming between September and November. This probability slightly increases to 60% for October to December 2025. However, the agency confirmed there is very little chance of El Niño conditions developing during the same period.
Past Patterns and Recent Records: 2020–2023 Triple-dip La Niña
The last major La Niña, which lasted from 2020 to 2023, was unusually long and became the first “triple-dip” La Niña of the 21st century. It was only the third such event since 1950. During this period, several regions faced intense droughts while others suffered from flooding.
Despite this cooling phase, the Earth continued to warm. In fact, the past 10 years are the hottest 10 ever recorded. Even after El Niño faded last year, temperatures did not drop significantly. Instead, 2024 became the hottest year on record, showing that La Niña’s cooling effect is no longer enough to offset rising global heat.
