A decline in genetic diversity across species has been observed over the past three decades, with a decrease seen among animal, plant, fungal, and chromist populations, according to a global review of over 600 species. The study, which was published in Nature, examined 882 studies from 1985 to 2019 and is the most comprehensive analysis of changes in genetic diversity within species to date. Concerns over the populations’ capacity to adjust to environmental changes were raised by the results, which showed that genetic variation decreased in two-thirds of the populations under study.
By guaranteeing that some individuals have characteristics that aid in their survival, genetic variety within a species enables populations to resist dangers like disease outbreaks and extreme weather occurrences, according to researchers. The long-term survival of a population can be improved by passing these traits on to subsequent generations.
Although the loss of genetic variety is a major concern, the researchers hypothesized that conservation measures could be able to stop more decreases and, in certain situations, even reverse the trend. They made the case that proactive steps are required to save biodiversity globally, citing current tactics that have effectively maintained genetic variation in particular species.
Causes and Broader Ecological Implications
The study discovered that the main causes of the decline in genetic diversity across species were comparable to those causing population decreases. The most important contributors were identified as invasive species, climate change, habitat damage, and the introduction of new illnesses. According to the researchers, ecological disturbances such as direct harassment, land-use changes, and human exploitation had affected 65% of the populations under study. However, a decrease in genetic variety was noted even in the absence of recorded disturbances, indicating a pattern of biodiversity destruction.
This occurrence, according to lead researcher Assoc. Prof. Catherine Grueber of the University of Sydney is a reflection of the larger biodiversity crisis that is connected to ecological changes such as climate change. She pointed out that one of the main objectives of the 2022 COP15 biodiversity summit was to preserve genetic diversity in both wild and domesticated species.

Conservation Success Stories
The study also emphasized effective conservation initiatives that have maintained or restored genetic diversity despite the concerning results. By carefully selecting individuals from genetically varied sources and tracking their characteristics over several generations, researchers were able to establish new populations of golden bandicoots in Western Australia. By using insecticides to stop fleas from spreading, black-tailed prairie dogs in the United States were able to survive and mate with other populations while avoiding a plague outbreak.
Due to conservation measures like supplemental feeding and the removal of red foxes from important habitats, Arctic fox populations in Scandinavia, which were formerly severely damaged by the fur trade and competition with red foxes, demonstrated indications of genetic recovery. Grueber underlined the value of maintaining genetic diversity and said there are practical ways to offset these losses. More than 500 animal species from 141 nations were included in the study, which emphasizes how urgently global conservation measures are needed to preserve biodiversity.
