Global sea surface temperatures rising 4.5x faster since 2019 highlights the growing effects of climate change. Global sea surface temperatures (SSTs) warmed by 0.06°C per decade between 1985 and 1989. In contrast, this rate increased to 0.27°C per decade between 2019 and 2023.
These findings, based on worldwide satellite data records collected by the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) between 1980 and 2023, were published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. The study demonstrates that human-induced climate factors are causing the oceans to warm at an unprecedented rate.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Driving Long-Term Ocean Warming
The study highlights that greenhouse gas emissions are the primary driver of rising ocean temperatures worldwide. Lead author Chris Merchant explained that greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, causing a planetary energy imbalance between the energy absorbed from the sun and the energy radiated back into space.
He emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and data updates to ensure that climate modeling accurately represents future temperature increases, noting that this imbalance is what drives climate change. While short-term weather events such as El Niño or volcanic eruptions may have brief warming or cooling impacts, they do not significantly influence the long-term warming trend.

Urgent Need for Continued Climate Monitoring and Model Refinement
Long-term sea surface warming is primarily caused by the accumulation of planetary energy, according to co-author and scientific leader of the ESA-CCI sea surface temperature study, Owen Embury. Volcanic activity, solar cycles, and El Niño events introduce variability but have little effect on the overall trend of rapidly rising ocean temperatures. Global sea surface temperatures rising 4.5x faster underscores the urgency of this trend.
Embury stated that accurate climate forecasts depend on understanding these changes. Increased ocean heat absorption can exacerbate sea-level rise, ecological disruption, and extreme weather events. He emphasized the importance of ongoing observation and climate model improvement.
The research also supports other ESA projects, such as Monitoring The Energy Cycle for a better Understanding Of Climate Change (MOTECUSOMA), which examines Earth’s energy imbalance and its effects on the climate.
This study contributes to the growing body of scientific information on the escalating climate crisis, highlighting its extensive impacts on ecosystems, human lives, and economies.
