According to satellite data, global sea ice hits record low; the amount of ice in the planet’s frozen oceans, which keeps the earth cold, is currently lower than it has ever been. According to British Antarctic Survey research scientist Tom Bracegirdle, “Atmospheric conditions in December and January looked like they were strongly promoting surface melting on the ice shelves.” He continued, “That could also have contributed to what we’ve seen in Antarctic sea ice, and ongoing ocean warming is setting the backdrop to all of this as well.

Long-term declines in sea ice are all but certain since the Arctic is warming at a rate that is almost four times faster than the global average.
