A team of international experts known as the “Global Carbon Project” predicts that India’s fossil fuel emissions will increase by 4.6% in 2024. In comparison, China, the world’s top emitter, is expected to see a 0.2% increase. According to the “Global Carbon Budget 2024” report, Global CO2 Emissions from fossil fuels, the primary cause of climate change, are expected to reach a new high of 37.4 billion tonnes in 2024, up 0.8% from the previous year. This prognosis comes despite increased attempts to adopt renewable energy and a decision at COP28 in Dubai last year to shift away from fossil fuels.
As the UN climate conference begins in Baku, Azerbaijan, discussions center on mobilizing trillions of dollars to address climate change challenges. However, the findings highlight the challenge of achieving immediate carbon reductions, even with major international agreements and policy pledges.
Regional Emission Trends: India’s Growing Share of Global Emissions
According to the analysis, global CO2 emissions will rise from 40.6 billion tonnes in 2023 to 41.6 billion tonnes in 2024, indicating a continuation of growing trends. India, the world’s most populous country and the fastest-growing major economy is likely to make a large contribution, with emissions expected to rise significantly. According to the latest UN data, India’s emissions increased by 6.1% in 2023, accounting for 8% of global totals. However, it is critical to contextualize India’s emissions in historical terms. The country contributes 3% of world CO2 emissions, with per capita emissions of only 2.9 tonnes, significantly lower than the global average of 6.6 tonnes.
Despite being the world’s third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, India has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. This ambition and a goal of installing 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030 demonstrate the country’s commitment to combating climate change. However, the short-term increase in emissions highlights the issues that businesses face as they strive to combine economic growth and sustainability.
China, which accounts for 32% of world emissions, is expected to have only a minor increase in emissions; in some cases, emissions may even decrease. In contrast, emissions from the United States and the European Union—which contribute 13% and 7% of world totals, respectively—are expected to fall. The United States is predicted to reduce emissions by 0.6%, while the EU will cut emissions by 3.8%. In comparison, emissions from the rest of the world, which account for 38% of total global emissions, might increase by 1.1%.

Fossil Fuel Dependence and the Challenge of Long-term Reductions
Coal, oil, and natural gas contribute significantly to world emissions, accounting for 41%, 32%, and 21% of total fossil CO2 emissions, respectively. Despite worldwide attempts to minimize reliance on these energy sources, the research forecasts a 0.2% rise in coal, 0.9% in oil, and 2.4% in gas by 2024. Uncertainty persists, with the potential of a reduction in coal emissions this year. Aviation and shipping emissions, which account for 3% of total world emissions, are expected to increase by 7.8% in 2024 but remain below pre-pandemic levels.
Land-use changes, caused mainly by deforestation, have multifacetedly impacted emissions. Despite a 20% reduction in emissions due to land-use changes during the last decade, these emissions are predicted to climb again in 2024. Reforestation and new forest planting offset roughly half of the deforestation emissions, contributing favorably to the global carbon sink. Technology-based CO2 removal plays a minor role, accounting for only around one millionth of fossil fuel emissions.
Carbon sinks on land and in the water are expected to absorb around half of total emissions by 2024, but climate change has begun to impact these natural sinks negatively. Wildfire emissions have also increased due to the harsh wildfire season in Canada that began in 2023 and will continue into 2024, as well as severe drought conditions in Brazil.
The findings highlight the enormous challenges the globe confronts in reversing emissions trends. Despite tremendous advances in renewable energy production and policy initiatives, rising emissions suggest that shifting away from fossil fuels will be lengthy and challenging, particularly in developing economies.
