The ongoing European heatwave is rewriting climate history, with scientists concluding that such an extreme event would have been “virtually impossible” just 50 years ago without human-caused climate change. According to a new attribution study by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group, the current heatwave is the most severe ever recorded across northern, western, and central Europe. Red heat alerts have been issued across the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and France, while temperatures continue to break long-standing records.
Researchers found that today’s climate is approximately 1.4°C warmer than pre-industrial levels, dramatically increasing both the intensity and likelihood of extreme heat events. The study also warns that rising humidity, warmer nights, and prolonged heat exposure are significantly increasing health risks for millions of people across the continent.
Scientists Link Record Heat to Climate Change
The WWA compared this year’s event with Europe’s major heatwaves of 1976 and 2003, when average global temperatures were 1.1°C and 0.6°C cooler than today, respectively.
Their findings were striking.
- Researchers concluded that a heatwave of this intensity would have been virtually impossible in 1976, while the chances of experiencing similar conditions in 2003 were tens to hundreds of times lower than they are today.
- Attribution studies use historical weather observations and climate models to measure how much human-induced global warming has increased the probability and severity of extreme weather events.

Dangerous Heat Stress Is Increasing
One of the study’s most concerning findings involves wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT), a measure that combines air temperature, humidity, wind, and solar radiation to estimate heat stress on the human body.
Researchers estimate that 45% of the 854 cities studied have already broken, or are expected to break, their all-time wet-bulb globe temperature records during this heatwave.
When humidity and temperature rise together, the body loses its ability to cool itself through sweating. Scientists explain that once the wet-bulb temperature reaches 35°C, sweat can no longer evaporate effectively, causing body temperature to rise rapidly and potentially leading to life-threatening heatstroke.

Hot Nights Are Becoming a Silent Health Threat
- The study also found that Europe’s daytime maximum temperatures are increasing nearly three times faster than the global average, while nighttime temperatures are warming about twice as fast.
- Warm nights prevent the human body from recovering after daytime heat exposure, increasing the risk of dehydration, cardiovascular stress, poor sleep quality, and heat-related illnesses.
- Supporting these concerns, a 2020 study by the Chinese University of Hong Kong found that experiencing five consecutive nights above 28°C increased the risk of death by 6.66%.

Limited Cooling Increases Vulnerability
Unlike countries where air conditioning is widespread, Europe remains particularly vulnerable. Only about 10% of European households have air conditioning, compared with approximately 90% in the United States and 60% in China. In India, the figure remains even lower at around 8%.
The UK’s independent Climate Change Committee recently estimated that 92% of existing homes in the country are likely to overheat during severe heatwaves unless significant adaptation measures are introduced.
As the European heatwave continues, experts are urging governments to improve cooling infrastructure, climate-resilient buildings, and public heat action plans. Carolina Pereira Marghidan of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre emphasized that awareness alone is no longer enough, warning that millions of people still live, work, and study in buildings never designed to withstand the extreme temperatures that Europe is increasingly experiencing.
