Life cycle assessment (LCA), also known as life cycle analysis, quantifies the environmental impacts of a product, process, or service over its entire life cycle. Every stage of a product’s life cycle – extraction of resources from the environment, production, usage phase, and what happens to the product once it is no longer utilized – can significantly influence the environment. These stages of a product’s life cycle are called life cycle stages. LCA allows you to assess the environmental implications of your product or service from the very first to the very last life cycle stage or any life cycle step in between. Life cycle studies can be carried out for a variety of scopes, including cradle-to-gate (raw materials till factory gate), gate-to-gate (sole concentrating on manufacturing processes), and cradle-to-grave (raw materials until disposal).
