According to a ground-breaking study published in Ecology and Evolution, vulture populations are falling throughout the Americas, with grave implications for ecosystems and human health. This first-of-its-kind study in Costa Rica, carried out by experts from OSA Conservation and the Centre for Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter, Cornwall, emphasizes vultures’ vital role in natural waste management. According to the results, pig carcasses take twice as long to disintegrate without vultures, and other scavengers—aside from flies, which double in number when these birds are absent—cannot fill the void. These declining vulture populations in the Americas highlight the urgent need to address vulture conservation since it poses serious hazards, including disease transmission and disturbances in ecosystem balance.
Vultures: Nature’s Essential Recyclers Under Threat
Since they effectively eliminate carrion that would otherwise decompose and spread illness, vultures have long been considered nature’s unsung heroes. Because they can quickly consume enormous volumes of decomposing flesh, species like the black vulture (Coragyps atratus) and turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) are essential to this process in the Americas. When pig carcasses were placed in regions with and without vulture access in Costa Rica, the researchers discovered that decomposition took 12 days in the vulture-free zone. In comparison, it only took 6 days in the vulture-present zone. This striking distinction demonstrates their unmatched scavenging efficiency. However, habitat loss, lead bullet poisoning in carrion, and deliberate killing motivated by cultural misunderstandings are all contributing to the decline in vulture populations. The IUCN has classified the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus), a close relative, as Vulnerable in South America. At the same time, the North American Breeding Bird Survey reports that sightings of turkey vultures have decreased by 15% in North America during the last ten years. The Fly Boom: An Imminent Public Health Emergency
The study’s most concerning conclusion is that fly populations have doubled in vulture-free areas. Unlike vultures, which are specialized scavengers, flies prefer an environment devoid of competition. Concerns regarding disease transmission were raised by the study’s finding that fly larvae on carcasses devoid of vulture activity increased by 100%. Pathogens such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and anthrax are known to be carried by flies and can infect humans and animals through contact or tainted water supplies. This presents a serious risk to public health in rural Costa Rican communities with potentially inadequate sanitation facilities. According to the study, vultures’ extremely acidic stomachs can neutralize most carrion viruses, which means flies cannot reproduce. The risk of zoonotic disease outbreaks increases with the quantity of flies. For example, more than 50 individuals became ill during a 2019 anthrax outbreak in Bolivia that was connected to a rise in fly activity following vulture reductions. The results from Costa Rica imply that if vulture numbers continue to decline, especially in tropical areas where flies are abundant all year round, such occurrences may become more common.
Ecosystem Imbalance: The Ripple Effects of Vulture Decline

According to the study, other scavengers, such as opossums, coyotes, and wild dogs, do not compensate for losing vultures. These creatures prefer fresher meat or are less efficient than vultures, which causes carcasses to fester for longer. More greenhouse gases, such as methane, are released during this extended decomposition, contributing to climate change. Scavenger studies frequently ignore this aspect. Fly larvae can destroy pollinator populations like bees, which are already in danger, and compete with local insects. Therefore, the growth in fly populations can also be detrimental to other species. Throughout the study, researchers found that bee activity near vulture-free zones decreased by 10% on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica, a hotspot for biodiversity. Plant reproduction is threatened by pollinator loss, which impacts herbivores and the food chain as a whole. By decreasing competition for carrion, vultures also indirectly help predator populations; in their absence, scavengers like feral dogs can multiply and cause more conflict between humans and wildlife. Some ecologists attribute the 20% increase in feral dog attacks on cattle in Brazil between 2015 and 2020 to a decline in vulture populations. These domino effects highlight the importance of vultures as keystone species for preserving ecological stability.

A Call to Action: Protecting Vultures for a Healthier Future
It is possible to address the issue of declining vulture populations in the Americas, but quick and concerted intervention is needed. The authors recommend that governments and conservation organizations prioritize vulture protection by implementing several essential policies. First, mortality rates might be considerably decreased by outlawing the use of lead ammunition for hunting, which is the primary source of vulture poisoning. By 2023, local turkey vulture survival rates had increased by 5% due to the 2019 implementation of a similar restriction in the U.S. state of California. Second, public education programs must debunk stereotypes about vultures as death-harboring creatures. Vultures prevent disease by cleaning up carrion. With early success in stabilizing populations in the Osa Peninsula, community-led programs in Costa Rica, including OSA Conservation’s “Vulture Guardians” program, have involved residents in vulture habitat monitoring and protection. Third, protecting habitat is essential.
Vulture nesting places are destroyed, and their food supply is diminished due to Amazonian deforestation, which has increased by 11% since 2020. Due to vultures’ cross-border migration, international collaboration is particularly crucial; the Convention on Migratory Species may help coordinate efforts throughout the Americas. The study highlights the need for additional research to determine the economic benefit of vultures, as estimates indicate that their carrion disposal services result in millions of dollars in yearly waste management cost savings. By funding vulture conservation, we can lessen the effects of climate change, preserve public health, and preserve ecosystems. “Vultures are not just scavengers—they are guardians of our planet’s health,” the researchers conclude.
