Eruption of Indonesia’s Laki-laki Volcano has claimed the lives of at least nine people until now. The event released powerful plumes of lava on Sunday in Eastern Indonesia, forcing the evacuation of several villages nearby, according to Heronimus Lamawuran, a local official in the East Flores area.
Volcanic Eruption and Immediate Aftermath
A blazing column of lava, volcanic ash, and rocks shot high into the sky on Sunday at 15:57 GMT when Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located on Flores Island in the East Nusa Tenggara province, erupted, according to Hadi Wijaya, spokesman for The Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). The impact of the eruption was further explained by Wijaya on Monday, who described how the sudden explosion caused power outages in the affected areas, followed by intense lightning and heavy rain, which caused residents to panic.
“The authority has raised the status of the volcano to level IV, the highest alert level,” Wijaya added. Residents in high-risk areas close to the volcano were immediately evacuated due to the elevated status, which indicates significant danger. “We have started evacuating residents since this morning to villages approximately 20 kilometers from the crater,” he said.
Damage and Evacuations of Eruption of Indonesia’s Laki-laki Volcano
Settlements roughly four kilometers from the volcano’s crater were hit by fiery lava and rock fragments that were released during the eruption. Wijaya confirmed that the houses in the nearby villages were damaged and burned by these pieces. To lower the chance of more deaths and damage, the agency has suggested clearing a seven-kilometer radius around the crater.
The surrounding communities were engulfed in heavy accumulations of volcanic ash by Monday morning, which increased the destruction and complicated evacuation operations. To determine the number of evacuees and the degree of structural damage to buildings and infrastructure, Heronimus stated that the authorities are currently collecting data.

Indonesia’s Volcanic Activity and Recent Eruptions
Due to its placement atop many tectonic plates, Indonesia is located in the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” an area with an elevated rate of seismic activity. This eruption is one of several that have occurred recently around Indonesia. When Mount Ibu, a volcanic mountain on the isolated island of Halmahera, erupted in May, seven nearby communities had to be evacuated. More than 12,000 people had to be evacuated by authorities due to the eruption of the Ruang volcano in North Sulawesi the same month.
Furthermore, on May 11, after heavy rains, a cold lava flow and flash floods from Mount Marapi in West Sumatra province impacted other neighbouring areas, killing more than 60 people. These occurrences highlight how Indonesia’s geographical location frequently puts its citizens at risk from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Local officials are keeping a careful eye on seismic activity and attempting to guarantee the safety of the local population as rescue and evacuation efforts around Mount Lewotobi continue. As they collect more information on evacuation, infrastructure damage, and continued volcanic activity, the authorities are anticipated to release further updates.
