Coral cover on the Great Barrier Reef recovers in several monitored areas after a difficult period of bleaching and other environmental pressures, according to Australia’s latest long-term reef assessment. The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) reported that hard coral cover in the Northern Great Barrier Reef increased from a record-low 30% in 2025 to 35.1% in the field season ending June 2026. The Central region also recorded an improvement, rising from 28.6% to 31.6%. However, the recovery was uneven, with coral cover in the Southern region falling slightly from 26.9% to 26.4%.
The figures come from AIMS’s 2025/26 Long-Term Monitoring Program Annual Summary Report, released on August 11, 2026. The programme surveyed 121 reefs to track changes in coral cover and overall reef condition.
Northern and Central Reefs Show Recovery
Hard coral cover measures the proportion of the reef surface occupied by living hard corals. It is widely used by scientists as an indicator of reef health and allows changes to be tracked over time.

Across all surveyed reefs, coral cover remained unchanged at 56% of sites, increased at 28%, and declined at 16%.
The results suggest that some reefs can recover when conditions become more favourable, but the overall picture remains mixed.

Cooler Conditions Helped Reduce Heat Stress
AIMS Long-Term Monitoring Program leader Dr Mike Emslie said a late-summer monsoon in early 2026 brought increased cloud cover and cooler sea surface temperatures.
This matters because prolonged marine heat can cause coral bleaching.
- During severe heat stress, corals expel the microscopic algae living within their tissues, leaving them pale or white.
- If stressful conditions persist, bleaching can lead to coral death.
- The cooler conditions associated with the monsoon may therefore have reduced thermal stress during a critical period.

Other Threats Continue to Pressure Reefs
The improvement does not mean the Great Barrier Reef has escaped its longer-term challenges. Scientists continue to monitor climate-related disturbances, cyclones and outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish, a coral-eating predator that can rapidly reduce living coral on affected reefs.
Repeated disturbances can also leave reefs with less time to recover between major events. This makes the difference between short-term recovery and sustained reef health particularly important.
The Great Barrier Reef, located off Australia’s northeastern coast in the Coral Sea, is the world’s largest coral reef system and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

UNESCO Keeps Reef Off Danger List
The latest monitoring results also come shortly after the UNESCO World Heritage Committee chose in July 2026 not to place the Great Barrier Reef on its List of World Heritage in Danger.
The AIMS findings provide evidence of recovery in parts of the reef, but the regional differences underline why continued monitoring remains important. A rise in coral cover in the Northern and Central regions does not necessarily indicate that the entire reef system has returned to a stable condition.
For marine scientists, the coral cover on the Great Barrier Reef recovers to 35.1% results offer a measure of encouragement while reinforcing the importance of understanding how reefs respond to changing temperatures, extreme weather and biological pressures. The coming monitoring seasons will show whether the recent gains can be maintained.
