Gurgaon records a new low of 0.6°C as a harsh cold wave swept across much of northern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the temperature dropped to near-freezing early Monday morning, and the situation was worsened by clear skies and dry air, which led to strong cooling on the ground across the plains. This unusual temperature drop is one of the lowest January temperatures the city has seen in many years.

Gurgaon’s Temperature Plummets to Historic Low
The IMD’s automatic weather station reported that Gurgaon’s minimum temperature reached 0.6°C, matching a low that happened on January 22, 1977, which is rare for the city. The temperature made the city colder than hill stations like Shimla and Mukteshwar, where temperatures stayed above 3°C to 4°C that morning.
Weather experts said the sharp temperature drop was caused by constant cold winds from the northwest and clear night skies, which allowed heat to escape quickly from the ground. Similar cold was felt in nearby areas, with frost forming on fields, car windows, and roofs, showing how severe the cold wave is in the area.

IMD Issues Alerts and Forecasts
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Gurgaon and nearby parts of Haryana, Delhi, and the National Capital Region (NCR), warning that the cold wave will continue for the next few days. Thick fog and ground frost are also expected, interrupting travel and causing health problems, especially in the early mornings and late nights.
Officials said that dry conditions will continue, and there won’t be any rain soon, and nighttime cooling could stay strong. Temperatures might rise a bit during the day, but overnight lows are expected to stay close to the current extremes before gradually getting warmer later in the week.

Cold Wave Spreads Across the Region
The extreme cold in Gurgaon is part of a larger pattern of severe winter weather in Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh. Many places have recorded temperatures that are much lower than normal, and some areas, like Bathinda, have also seen lows around 0.6°C. Thick fog and cold conditions are affecting large areas of northern India.
Gurgaon records a new low of 0.6°C because of a strong cold wave that has tightened its grip across the plains, bringing record cold, travel problems, and increased health risks for people in the region. Local authorities are telling people to use fog lights when driving and to take steps to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
