Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels are expected to stay dangerously high in 2025 after undergoing the sharpest annual increase between 2023 and 2024. Based on information from Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory, the UK Met Office forecast in January that CO2 Emissions will reach 429.6 PPM by May 2025. For more than two million years, this concentration has never been this high.

The anticipated increase of 2.26 ppm from 2024 to 2025 maintains a concerning trend that significantly surpasses the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) projections for keeping global warming to 1.5°C. The annual CO2 increase must slow to about 1.8 ppm and then reverse to meet this crucial goal, which is specified in the Paris Agreement. Rather, there is no indication that the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will stop.

Drivers of the CO2 Levels That Broke Records

The dramatic increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations in 2024 highlights a concerning confluence of forces. During 2023 and 2024, Mauna Loa’s long-running CO2 monitoring, which started in 1958, showed an extraordinary annual increase of 3.58 ppm, exceeding the Met Office’s prediction of 2.84 ppm. Globally, significant CO2 increases were confirmed by satellite data.

Massive CO2 emissions from wildfires, reduced carbon absorption by natural sinks like tropical forests, and record-high emissions from fossil fuels all contributed to the surge. The Met Office reports that carbon emissions from fossil fuels increased from 40.6 billion tonnes in 2023 to 41.6 billion tonnes in 2024. The problem is worsened because, according to the EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), wildfires worldwide released 7.3 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2023.

Forest fires increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by releasing stored carbon. The annual average CO2 concentration in 2025 is still too high to fit the IPCC’s 1.5°C scenario, even if estimates indicate that it will rise at a slower rate of 2.26 ppm.

Worldwide Consequences and the Way Ahead

Increasing CO2 levels trap heat, raising global temperatures and having dire repercussions. Temperatures in 2024 surpassed those in 2023, setting a somber record as the warmest year ever. The World Weather Attribution’s annual report shows that extreme weather occurrences in 2024 hit previously unheard-of heights, highlighting the growing threats climate change poses.

The effects were catastrophic: millions were displaced, and thousands of people died as a result of heat waves, droughts, wildfires, storms, and floods. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), severe weather events caused more than 3,200 deaths in India alone in 2024.

According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), 2025 is expected to rank among the three hottest years, as CO2 emissions will reach 429.6 PPM by May. Extreme weather is the second most important global risk for 2025–2027; this warming trend will worsen.

The long-term warming trend will persist because CO2 continues to accumulate in the atmosphere,” said Professor Richard Betts, head of the Met Office’s forecast division, underscoring the need to address the situation immediately. The immediate suspension of greenhouse gas accumulation and subsequent reductions is necessary to stop global warming, even though La Niña circumstances are predicted to temporarily decrease the rise of atmospheric CO2 via improving carbon absorption by ecosystems. Betts also emphasized that the only way to control global warming and avoid a temperature overshoot beyond 1.5°C is to make significant and quick emissions cuts. This calls for swift, concerted global action to cut carbon emissions and slow the worsening climate calamity.
