This spring’s exceptionally warm weather, which is associated with climate breakdown, has gardeners in the UK quite concerned about aphids. Climate change fuels aphid invasion in the UK, as many of the 600,000 members of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) report infestations on roses, acers, and honeysuckle plants. The sap-sucking insects have emerged as the most common worry among the inquiries the RHS receives.
Aphids like warm, dry climates and are usually killed by frost, which has decreased in frequency due to changing climatic trends. UK gardens have around 500 different kinds of aphids, such as plant lice, blackflies, and greenflies. They feed on the sap of plants and can be red, yellow, black, green, brown, or pink. This can cause deformed growth, sooty mold, viral transmission, and even plant death.
Climate Change and Aphid Adaptability
According to Hayley Jones, the RHS’s principal entomologist, several aphid species may benefit from climate change and the UK’s increasingly intense warm periods. However, she also drew attention to other factors, including variations in predator numbers, general plant health, and sharp temperature changes.

According to Jones, aphids are physiologically suited to thrive in warm climates since they are born carrying the next generation, which enables their numbers to grow quickly under the right circumstances. The RHS has also seen aphids feasting on plants that they had previously disregarded. For example, a species has started to deform the leaves of Buddleia. Through its website, the RHS has asked the public to report sightings to monitor its spread.

Managing Infestations with Eco-Friendly Approaches
Aphids are an essential part of the garden ecosystem, even though they are pests, since they provide food for earwigs, ladybirds, birds, and various other predatory insects. However, harm can increase when predator populations outpace aphid population increases. The RHS states this is the case this spring and encourages gardeners to remove aphids as predator populations gradually rise.
Instead of using toxic pesticides, the RHS is experimenting with eco-friendly pest management techniques. These include putting up earwig shelters in the orchard at RHS Garden Wisley and placing poached egg plants (Limnanthes douglasii) close to cabbages to draw hoverfly larvae. If these studies are successful, the RHS intends to expand the use of these techniques. Results are anticipated next year.
