Satellite Data and Spatial Analysis Reveal the Source

Spatial analysis and satellite data were used to find 20 waterholes close to corpses that had higher algal blooms during the elephant deaths. Between 2015 and 2023, the greatest amounts of algae biomass were seen in these waterholes. The toxic algae bloom blamed for mass elephant deaths was further linked to climatic variations, such as the shift from an exceptionally dry 2019 to an exceptionally rainy 2020, which most certainly resuspended sediments and nutrients, promoting uncommon algae development.
