Shipping fuel regulations introduced in 2020 have significantly reduced sulphur dioxide (SO2) pollution, but a recent modeling study suggests that they may also have contributed to ocean warming by reducing cloud cover. The key finding, “Cleaner Shipping Fuel Is Escalating Ocean Warming,” underscores the unintended consequences of these environmental regulations.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) implemented rules to address marine pollution, requiring shippers to lower their fuel sulphur content from 3.5% to 0.5%. This change resulted in an 80% decrease in SO2 emissions, as reported by a research team led by Tianle Yuan at the University of Maryland.

Climate researchers have identified the reduction of SO2 as a potential factor contributing to record ocean temperatures in 2015. Some also suggest that decreases in air pollution worldwide may have accelerated global warming.

This cooling effect of SO2 is well understood and has been documented following several major volcanic eruptions emitting SO2 over the past 2,000 years, according to Stuart Haszeldine, director of the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute at the University of Edinburgh.

Haszeldine, who was not involved with the paper, stated that while it is challenging to make precise predictions about the impact on global temperatures, the trend is very clear, highly concerning, and extremely significant.

Some scientists believe the study may overstate the impact of the IMO fuel policy. According to Joel Hirschi at Britain’s National Oceanography Centre, research into the causes of recent high temperatures is ongoing. He emphasized that the reduced sulphur content in ship fuel is just one of many contributing factors. The complexity of climate systems means that pinpointing a single cause for temperature fluctuations requires careful analysis of multiple variables.

The authors of the study related to Cleaner Shipping Fuel Is Escalating Ocean Warming indicated that their findings suggest marine cloud brightening could become a potential geoengineering solution to global warming. This concept involves increasing the reflectivity of clouds to send more sunlight back into space, thereby cooling the Earth’s surface.

Scientists have been exploring various methods to reflect heat back into space. Proposals to inject SO2 into the atmosphere, mimicking the cooling effects of volcanic eruptions, have been controversial due to potential side effects and ethical concerns. Other experiments have aimed to spray seawater into the air to thicken clouds, enhancing their ability to reflect sunlight. These geoengineering techniques are still in the experimental stages and require extensive testing to understand their feasibility and long-term impacts fully.

The ongoing exploration of such solutions highlights the urgent need for innovative approaches to combat global warming. As the scientific community continues to investigate the interplay between pollution reduction and climate change, it is crucial to consider a wide range of strategies and their potential consequences.
