According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), China is to lead the Global Green Energy surge with 60% of new projects by 2030. According to the IEA’s most recent renewable energy report, renewable energy projects are predicted to be implemented three times faster than in the previous six years, owing mainly to China and India’s aggressive clean energy programs. The analysis stated that worldwide renewable energy capacity is on course to exceed government targets for 2030, potentially equalling the combined power systems of China, the EU, India, and the United States.

The IEA’s executive director, Fatih Birol, summed up the trend in two words: “China, solar.” By the end of the decade, China will lead Global Green Energy, with solar power accounting for a large chunk of that. This rise in solar installations has already halted the country’s coal-powered expansion. In the first half of 2024, China granted permits for only 12 new coal power projects, substantially decreasing from the 100 GW granted in 2022 and 2023.

Global Growth in Solar and Wind Power
The IEA predicts that solar energy will dominate the renewable energy boom, accounting for 80% of all new renewable power added globally by the end of this decade. This projection underscores the immense potential of solar power to revolutionize the energy landscape. As costs decrease and government initiatives encourage households and businesses to invest in solar panels, the growth of solar capacity is likely to accelerate, offering a promising solution to increasing electricity bills. Wind power is also projected to rebound from recent setbacks, especially in the offshore wind industry. The IEA projects that global wind power growth will double from 2024 to 2030 compared to the previous six years. The UK government has set ambitious ambitions to double offshore wind capacity by 2030, including promoting the development of floating wind turbines, which are likely to play a big role in the offshore wind industry by 2050.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
Despite the rapid gains, the IEA warned that more effort has to be made to reach global renewable energy targets. Although renewables are expected to rise 2.7 times by 2030, exceeding government targets by roughly 25%, this falls short of the commitment made by world leaders at the UN’s COP28 climate talks in Dubai. At COP28, almost 120 world leaders promised to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 as part of a bold push to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. This underscores the need for global cooperation in achieving these targets, as no single country can solve this challenge alone.
Birol proposed three critical initiatives countries may take to accelerate renewable energy growth. First, he emphasised the need for power grids to connect the expanding number of renewable energy plants. The IEA discovered that 1,650 gigawatts of renewable power are now in advanced stages of development but are awaiting grid connections.
Second, Birol urged governments to speed up the approval process for renewable energy projects, which can take up to seven years for wind farms and five years for solar plants. Finally, the IEA recommended international financial institutions increase their support for renewable energy projects in emerging economies, notably in Sub-Saharan Africa, where solar power potential is mostly untapped.
By solving these problems, the world may improve its renewable energy targets and reduce its dependency on fossil fuels, paving the path for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
