China expedited the digitalization of the National Ecological Monitoring Network, a comprehensive strategy recently launched by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. The strategy aims to transition from conventional monitoring methods to a more automated and intelligent system.
The ministry aims for China to begin researching the next phase of ecological networks for monitoring in important regions by 2027. These will incorporate revolutionary innovations such as intelligent sampling systems and self-sustaining maintenance. Additionally, to guarantee consistent data gathering and increased efficiency, standardized monitoring activities will be conducted across the country.
The action is a major step toward creating a completely computerized and smart environmental monitoring network, according to Jiang Huohua, head of the ministry’s ecological and environmental monitoring section. He underlined that unmanned operations would be used to modernize water and air quality monitoring systems, and that analytical and intelligent sampling capabilities would be added.
Innovative Technology Will Transform Noise Monitoring and Biodiversity
Tracking biodiversity will also be a priority of the updated monitoring network to increase species identification precision, which is expected to exceed 85%. Sophisticated devices such as infrared detectors and bird sound recorders will be employed. These technologies will help us better understand and safeguard China’s distinctive ecosystems.
Monitoring of the urban sound environment will progress beyond determining decibel levels in the context of noise pollution. New machinery will be able to pinpoint the origins of noise, giving environmental policymakers and urban planners more precise information.
Jiang pointed out that satellite remote sensing and artificial intelligence will be more significant in China’s environmental monitoring plan. These technologies will facilitate real-time decision-making and analysis and help with data collection.

2030 Vision: An Intelligent, Integrated Eco-Network
To achieve its goal of fully modernizing the eco-environmental monitoring system by 2030, China expedited the Digitalization of the National Ecological Monitoring Network through strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing automation and data integration. An integrated network of aerial, terrestrial, and marine surveillance systems is what the strategy aims to achieve. A “smart brain,” or digital command center, will be a key component of this system, processing and coordinating data across a network.
To establish the foundation for a tech-driven and sustainable monitoring infrastructure, policies will also be adopted to assist the growth of environmentally conscious robots and remote-operation equipment.
Jiang noted that the introduction of these new infrastructures and technologies represents an important shift in China’s approach to managing and protecting its ecological systems, not just a technological advancement.
