China delivered the world’s first FPSO with a carbon capture system, which is a floating production storage and offloading vessel. It is usually responsible for extracting, processing, and storing crude oil from offshore fields.
The new China-delivered world’s first FPSO with a Carbon Capture System is the first of its kind to integrate a marine carbon capture and storage (CCS) system, enabling the vessel to capture carbon dioxide emissions produced during both maritime transport and oil extraction processes.
Leaving what is usually an unsustainable procedure of extracting oil with a sustainable advantage beyond capturing emissions, the vessel harnesses waste heat from exhaust gases to generate electricity, enhancing energy efficiency while reducing the environmental footprint.

The vessel’s monumental size is engineered to process up to 120,000 barrels of crude oil daily, positioning it as a significant asset in offshore oil production with a high production capacity.

Addressing Global Carbon Emissions
Traditionally off, offshore oil and gas operations produce large amounts of carbon dioxide, usually feeding into the cycle of global warming. In 2023 alone, approximately 38 million tons were emitted. Without intervention, this figure could escalate to nearly 25 million tons by 2030.
However, with the additional implementation of CCS technology China delivered the world’s first FPSO with a Carbon Capture System that offers a more practical approach to mitigating emissions from offshore activities while still balancing economic profit, marking a pivotal advancement in marine CCS technologies and contributing to global carbon reduction efforts.
The vessel is an energy-efficient one; it does so by converting and reproducing the waste heat energy from the process of extracting oil from exhaust gases into electrical energy for power generation, optimizing both sustainability and operational efficiency.
