China has connected its first large-scale, grid-connected flywheel energy storage system to the power grid in Changzhi, Shanxi Province. The Dinglun Flywheel Energy Storage Power Station, with a capacity of 30 MW, is now the world’s largest flywheel energy storage project which is operational, surpassing previous records set by similar projects in the United States.
Advancement in Flywheel Technology
This flywheel storage system, developed by Shenzhen Energy Group with technology from BC New Energy, consists of 120 high-speed magnetic levitation flywheel units. These units are designed to store energy in the form of kinetic energy by spinning flywheels at high speeds. With each unit capable of producing between 35-45 kWp of power, the system is designed for high efficiency and rapid response, which is ideal for balancing the power grid as renewable energy sources like wind and solar are increasingly utilized.
The Dinglun facility employs an innovative semi-buried underground well system, which provides a safe environment for maintaining the flywheel units. This design ensures minimal energy loss through friction while maintaining operational safety.

A Global Milestone
This project sets a new benchmark in energy storage. Previously, the largest flywheel energy storage system was the Beacon Power flywheel station in Stephentown, New York, with a capacity of 20 MW. Now, with Dinglun’s 30 MW capacity, China has taken the lead in this sector.
Flywheel storage technology offers several advantages over conventional energy storage methods.
- It has a higher energy density and longer lifespan compared to lithium-ion batteries.
- Moreover, flywheels have a lower environmental impact since they do not use toxic chemicals and can maintain operational efficiency for 20-30 years.

So we have 120 flywheels each capable of doing up to 45 kW in the peak, and then the whole facility can output 30 MW?
1) How many acres of land is required for putting up 30mw ?
2) It is to generate 30 mw and store straightaway?
3) what if my country’s national grid main intake station is located adjacent to my land ? Is 7 acres enough for this 30 mw capacity?
4) i believe your flywheel method need wind & solar to work in conjunction wit? What if my land has electricity city supply to kick off the flywheel? Then how much land is needed for project ? (i.e. minus wind turbines & solar pv panels required to kick start flywheel). In short is my 7 acres land adjacent to main intake station enough to start this 30 mw green energy power generating plant?
5) how much investment required for 30 mw capacity?
6) if 7 acres is not enough, i have another 27 acres prime industrial land for the project. But nearest main intake station is 6.5km away. So i have to pull armoured cable 6.5km away to link up with national grid.
