At least 11 people have been killed by the continuing California wildfires, which have also caused more than 180,000 residents to evacuate. Authorities worry that as the fires expand, the number of fatalities might increase. When the Palisades Fire exploded northward late Friday, evacuation orders were expanded to include a large portion of the Brentwood neighborhood. Authorities caution that the situation is still dire and that fire activity is predicted to continue for the next week. This crisis is among the most important in Los Angeles’ recent history due to the extent of the damage.

Six Major California Wildfires Ravage Communities

There are now six large, active wildfires causing havoc in Los Angeles County, further intensifying the ongoing California wildfires crisis:

  • Palisades Fire: This 21,317-acre fire has burned over 5,300 buildings and claimed the lives of at least two individuals. Kristin Crowley, the chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department, described it as “one of the most destructive natural disasters in Los Angeles history.” Just 8% of the fire has been controlled.
  • Eaton Fire: The Eaton Fire, which scorched 14,117 acres close to Pasadena, has killed five people. With containment at only 3%, almost 7,000 structures have been destroyed or severely damaged.
  • Kenneth Fire: This fire is 50% controlled and covers 1,000 acres in the Hidden Hills and Calabasas regions. After being arrested, an arson suspect was eventually freed because there was insufficient evidence.
  • Lidia Fire: On Wednesday, the Lidia Fire broke out in the Antelope Valley, burning 395 acres. 98% percent of the fire has been contained.
  • Hurst Fire: This fire, which covers 771 acres close to San Fernando, is 70% controlled.
  • Archer Fire: The Archer Fire, which started near Granada Hills on Friday morning, has burned 19 acres and is still uncontrolled.

As of Thursday, the Hollywood Hills Sunset Fire was completely controlled.

Landmarks at Risk and Dire Outlook

The Palisades Fire evacuation zone includes the Getty Museum, a cultural institution in Los Angeles. Over 37,000 acres have burned, and about 10,000 structures have been damaged across all current fires. Containment attempts are hampered by critical conditions and unpredictable winds, which present tremendous obstacles for firefighters. There is still a chance that there may be further flare-ups throughout the weekend and the following week.
