Budget 2026 backs natural fibers as the government shares its plan to improve India’s textile, handloom, and handicraft sectors. The 2026–27 Union Budget includes several new measures to help the textile industry become more self-sufficient, create jobs, and compete globally. On February 1, 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that textiles are critical to manufacturing growth. The plans will focus on modernizing operations, using resources efficiently, and supporting craftspeople, thereby making India a stronger textile center worldwide.
National Fiber Scheme to Reduce Import Dependence
One of the key components of the budget is the National Fiber Scheme, which is designed to help India develop its own natural fibers, such as silk, wool, and jute, as well as new synthetic fibers. The plan wants to help the country make more fibers itself and not have to buy as much from other countries.
This plan should help farmers, producers, and manufacturers in the textile business. With other programs, it is part of the Integrated Program for the Textile Sector, which has been assigned ₹1,500 crore in the 2026–27 Budget. The budget also includes the Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swaraj Initiative to strengthen the khadi, handloom, and handicraft sectors, and the program will focus on branding, global market access, training, quality assurance, and improving production.

Making Textile Centers Modern and Creating More Jobs
The government is proposing the Textile Expansion and Employment Scheme to revitalize existing textile centers, and this plan will give money to help buy better machines, upgrade to better technology, and create shared testing and certification places. These actions are intended to improve products, meet global standards, and make them easier to sell. Focusing on job creation is expected to strengthen textile centers and improve their ability to compete with other countries.
It should benefit weavers, village businesses, young people in rural areas, and the ‘One District One Product’ initiative. A National Handloom and Handicraft Program will also integrate current plans to ensure craftspeople receive the support they need.

Sustainability, Skills, and Mega Textile Parks
The Tex-Eco Initiative was established to support the production of products in ways that do not harm the environment, thereby encouraging sustainable textile and clothing production that can compete globally, following the growing demand from other countries for eco-friendly products.
The budget also allocated funds for Samarth 2.0 to modernize textile skills through partnerships with schools and businesses, creating Mega Textile Parks to improve infrastructure and add value. Together, these actions demonstrate that Budget 2026 backs natural fibers and helps India’s textile industry grow.
