A report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) indicates that British EV buyers drive a surge in green-coloured cars. This trend shows a change in what people want as the UK’s car market shifts to electric vehicles and changes the colors people pick for their rides. SMMT officials have said that car companies are reacting by offering more color options and different models to attract buyers who care about the environment.
Green Cars Reach a 20-Year Peak
In 2025, the sales of green cars in Britain hit their highest level in the last two decades, with 99,793 green cars registered last year, which is a 46.3% increase compared to 2024. This number accounts for almost 5% of all new car sales. Industry experts believe that the rise in green car sales is closely linked to the growing popularity of EVs and other electric models.
Together, these vehicles made up over 48% of the UK’s new car market in 2025, including battery-electric, hybrid-electric, and plug-in hybrid cars. Within this shift, green battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are especially popular, and sales of green BEVs almost doubled to 23,249 units, showing how the move to EVs is influencing both the type of car people buy and the colors they prefer.

How the Market Works and Color Trends
Gray was the most popular car color for the eighth year in a row, followed by black, blue, and white, which also sold well. These simple colors still make up most of the new car registrations, which means that classic colors are still widely liked.
New car registrations in the UK exceeded 2 million in 2025, and electric vehicles are close to making up half of the market, supported by government plans to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2035. These national goals are helping to shape what people buy, with many buyers choosing green EVs as a way to show they care about the environment.

How the Industry is Responding and What to Expect
Mike Hawes, the chief executive of the SMMT, said that color trends can show bigger cultural and market changes, especially as the UK’s car industry keeps changing to electric and low-emission technologies.
Car makers and dealers see the growing interest in green EVs as part of a larger plan to match their products with environmental priorities and appeal to buyers who want both good performance and sustainability. As the EV market continues to grow, choices like color show how customer attitudes are changing along with technology. British EV buyers drive surge in green-coloured cars, showing how the country’s move to electric vehicles is not only changing sales numbers but also changing what cars look like on Britain’s roads.
