The BRICS Nations reach a consensus on energy security at the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting held in Gurugram, India, marking another step toward strengthening cooperation on clean energy, resilient infrastructure, and technological innovation. Representing a bloc that accounts for nearly half of the world’s population, around 40% of global GDP (PPP), and a significant share of global energy demand, BRICS countries reaffirmed their commitment to building secure, affordable, and sustainable energy systems while respecting each member’s national priorities and development pathways.

The ministers adopted a joint consensus covering energy security, sustainability, energy access and equity, innovation, resilient infrastructure, and capacity building, highlighting the growing importance of international collaboration as countries navigate the global energy transition.

India Highlights Its Energy Transformation

Addressing the ministerial meeting, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal reiterated India’s vision of creating “resilient, future-ready and people-centric energy systems” guided by the principle of “Energy for All.”

He emphasized that developing economies require adequate policy flexibility, financial resources, and technological support to pursue sustainable development while meeting growing energy demand.

  • Highlighting India’s progress over the past decade, the minister noted that the country has become the world’s third-largest producer and consumer of electricity, with an installed power generation capacity of nearly 540 GW.
  • More than 50% of India’s installed electricity capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources, including solar, wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear energy, reflecting the country’s accelerating clean energy transition.

Digital Centre of Excellence Launched

A major outcome of the meeting was the launch of the Digital Centre of Excellence for Smart Grids and Energy Storage under the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform.

The centre aims to promote collaboration on next-generation power systems by advancing digital grid technologies, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, artificial intelligence, automation, and real-time energy management solutions. These technologies are expected to improve grid reliability while supporting the integration of rapidly growing renewable energy capacity across BRICS nations.
