At least 46 people have died in the Brazil floods, after days of heavy rain sent flash floods and landslides tearing through Minas Gerais, and rescue teams are still digging through rubble and thick mud in places like Juiz de Fora and Ubá, with more than 20 people still missing. Rivers and drainage systems just couldn’t keep up, so the water spilled everywhere, wrecking homes and streets. In Juiz de Fora, it rained more this February than in any other on record, over twice the usual amount, officials said. The state declared a public emergency, hoping to speed up federal aid and get help to those who lost everything.

Human Cost and Displacement

The floods have displaced thousands of people from their homes, and it is estimated that 3,000 to 3,600 people have been displaced in the affected region. Some of these families are taking refuge in temporary shelters erected in schools and community centers, while others are being assisted by volunteers and churches in the region.

Among the victims is 11-year-old Bernardo Lopes Dutra, whose death in Juiz de Fora has become a tragic reminder of the human cost of the disaster, and his father, who is struggling to cope with the tragedy while waiting to hear news of other family members, said that the event was unforeseen and very painful. At least 20 landslides have been reported in the region since the rains started.

Efforts by the Government to Respond and Rescue

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva deployed the country’s defense and health personnel to help firefighting teams, medical personnel, and volunteers respond to the crisis by conducting rescue and relief operations.

The Juiz de Fora Mayor, Margarida Salomão, asked residents living in areas prone to landslides to evacuate and seek shelter because there is still a risk of landslides due to rain, even after rainfall has decreased. Debris has blocked roads, bridges, and underpasses, further complicating rescue efforts to reach isolated neighborhoods.

Aftermath and Risk of Future Floods
