Bald Eagle Murphy Dies at 33 After Missouri Storms

Murphy was found lifeless on March 15, 2025; Murphy met his end after wild thunderstorms ripped through Missouri from March 14-16, unleashing tornadoes and dust storms that killed 42 people across multiple states.

A vet check showed he’d suffered a blow to the head—maybe he panicked and fell, or the storm’s fury knocked him off balance. Caregivers can’t pin it down exactly, but the tempest’s timing raises questions. The three other eagles in his pen came through fine, and their shared space didn’t collapse. Shelters were there, yet something went wrong for the old bird that night.

Rock Dad to Real Dad – Murphy’s Rise to Fame

Back in 2023, Murphy turned heads worldwide when pics of him fussing over a rock like it was his own chick hit the web—pure instinct shining through. His caretakers saw potential and handed him two orphaned eaglets to foster. He nailed it, proving he was more than a one-hit wonder with that stone.

Grounded by an old injury, Murphy had called the sanctuary home for years, living large despite never taking flight again.

Murphy’s Mark Lives On

That second chick he raised is gearing up for freedom, a quiet nod to Murphy’s knack for parenting. The sanctuary is dubbing its eagle fostering spot “Murphy’s Manor,” a tribute to how he shaped its understanding of caring for orphaned birds of prey.

Clocking 33 years, he outlasted most bald eagles, who usually have an average lifespan of 20-25. His grit and charm left a deep mark—staff and fans alike won’t forget him.
