In a major climatic historical event, the Atlantic records three simultaneous hurricanes, causing a massive impact on the southeastern coast of the United States, with states such as Florida, Georgia, and South and North Carolina taking the brunt of the damages dealt by the 3 hurricanes namely, Milton, Kirk and Leslie.

Hurricane Activity Patterns

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has confirmed this extraordinary occurrence, highlighting the rarity of such intense hurricane activity this late in the season. Normally, hurricane activity in the Atlantic starts to decrease by October, but this year’s pattern deviates from historical trends.

Hurricane Milton, with winds reaching up to 160 mph, increased to a category 5 hurricane on October 7th, the strongest of the three, and is currently moving northward in the central Atlantic as category 2, with Florida recovering from its recent touch down on land, causing widespread dissent, property damage, flooding and panic across the state.

Hurricane Kirk has developed into a category 2 storm, slowly weakening to category 1, reaching its peak intensity as a category 4 hurricane on October 4. Expected to remain over open waters, the hurricane moves towards the eastern Atlantic.

Meanwhile Leslie has transformed into a category 1 hurricane recently formed near the Bahamas causing a huge alert and safety concern for the citizens across Florida and the southeastern U.S.

Response and Recovery Strain

The unexpected occurrence where the Atlantic records three simultaneous hurricanes has caused a severe impact on the infrastructure and livelihoods of the southeastern states with Governor DeSantis and other local leaders advising emergency voluntary and mandatory evacuation affecting potentially more than 6 million residents.

President Biden ordered 500 additional active-duty troops to support on-the-ground efforts; 1,500 troops are now mobilized to assist National Guard and Federal personnel. Additionally, storm resources are being allocated towards emergency life assistance during this triple hurricane emergency.

Call for Climate Resilience

There is an imminent need for enhanced policies, adequate response, and preventative measures to such aggravated natural disasters, with particular attention given to protecting the coastline against rising sea levels, which highlight the disastrous effects of oil and gas extraction. Improved hurricane forecasting technologies and a collaborative nationwide effort are required to combat what is sure to be the first of many disastrous natural calamities due to climate change.
