Crocodiles flourish in Florida’s nuclear plant as the Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station, just south of Miami, has become an unexpected haven for American crocodiles, a once-endangered species, blending nature with industry. What started as an unexpected discovery in the cooling canals of the plant in the 1970s has become a conservation success story. Because of the highly controlled environment and artificial nesting sites, almost 25% of the crocodile population in the United States now lives in this artificial habitat.

Soon after the first nests were discovered in 1977, the crocodile monitoring program began in 1978. This was the start of an unexpected partnership between local wildlife experts and Florida Power & Light (FPL).

How Crocodiles Flourish in Florida’s Nuclear Plant: A Conservation Success

Less than 300 American crocodiles remained in Florida in 1975, when the species was listed as endangered. Two years later, Turkey Point employees found a crocodile nest within the cooling canal system of the plant. FPL started a monitoring and protection program instead of removing the reptiles.

By providing secluded nesting sites away from human disturbances, elevated berms for egg-laying, and freshwater ponds necessary for hatchlings, the 5,900-acre canal system unintentionally created the perfect environment for crocodiles. Turkey Point is one of Florida’s most productive crocodile breeding habitats because of these conditions. Between April and May, female crocodiles lay between 30 and 50 eggs annually; however, many hatchlings are killed by fish, gulls, birds, and crabs before they mature.

Environmental Concerns and the Future of Conservation

The recovery of the species has been greatly aided by the Turkey Point crocodile program. The nuclear plant’s efforts helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reclassify the American crocodile from endangered to threatened in 2007. About 7,000 crocodile hatchlings have been caught, measured, and monitored by biologists since 1978. As natural habitats are threatened by coastal development and rising sea levels, FPL has altered the landscape to establish designated nesting areas to further assist the species and provide a stable breeding environment.

Turkey Point has been the subject of environmental disputes despite its conservation achievements. Concerns over water contamination were raised in 2016 after scientists found high concentrations of the radioactive isotope tritium in nearby Biscayne Bay. Even though research has not shown that the plant directly harms wildlife, environmental organizations are still dubious about its long-term effects. Furthermore, the severe temperatures in 2015 caused the canals to become more saline, which decreased the number of successful crocodile nests. Any biological disruptions at Turkey Point may have wider repercussions for nearby protected areas because of its proximity to Biscayne and Everglades National Parks.
