Hedgehogs scurry across parks and gardens at night, weaving themselves into the fabric of urban ecosystems. However, a pioneering study from Lund University in Sweden has revealed a worrying reality: these small creatures carry high environmental toxins. The findings portray a grim picture of urban pollution, including lead and heavy metals, pesticides, brominated flame retardants, plastic additives, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The study, published in Environmental Pollution, emphasises the threats to wildlife and the potential dangers hidden in the surroundings where most humans live. Researchers discovered a distinct “environmental fingerprint” of urban regions by studying dead hedgehogs, raising serious concerns about the manmade materials and environmental pollutants detected in Hedgehogs.

Environmental Pollutants Detected in Hedgehogs

A Surprising Pollutant Cocktail

The Lund University team, led by ecotoxicologist Maria Hansson, set out to research the occurrence of environmental toxins in urban habitats, with hedgehogs serving as their study subjects. What they discovered was unsettling. “What surprised us was that there were so many different environmental pollutants in the animals, such as PCBs and several different phthalates, and that there were very high concentrations of certain heavy metals, especially lead,” Hansson said. While prior research in other European cities has found elevated levels of environmental pollutants detected in Hedgehogs, the wide range of contaminants discovered in this study was surprising.

The researchers found 11 distinct elements in the hedgehogs’ tissues, including heavy metals like lead and 48 organic environmental contaminants. For the first time, scientists discovered evidence of PAH, phthalate, and pesticide exposure in liver tissue—a novel method that revealed the amount of pollution in these urban-dwelling rodents. Phthalates, which are extensively used as plasticizers in plastics and rubber, were found alongside PCBs, dangerous compounds that have been outlawed since the 1970s but remain in the environment. Brominated flame retardants, which are commonly found in electronics and furniture, and pesticides used in agriculture and gardening exacerbated the hazardous burden.

Why Hedgehogs? An Environmental Fingerprint

Hedgehogs were a perfect fit for this study. These nocturnal critters travel large distances at night, typically covering several kilometres as they hunt for insects and invertebrates in parks, gardens, and green places. This behaviour renders them especially vulnerable to environmental toxins since they come into contact with tainted soil, plants, and prey. “Analysing hedgehogs provides us with a kind of environmental fingerprint of what is in an area’s ecosystem,” Hansson said. “Such knowledge is complicated to access, but the hedgehogs have given us a unique insight into what kind of urban environmental pollution we have directly around us.”

The study occurred in Lund and adjacent areas in Skåne, Sweden, where the team gathered deceased hedgehogs with the public’s assistance. Some were roadkill, while others were submitted for wildlife rehabilitation but did not live. The researchers thoroughly understood the contaminants affecting these animals by investigating both long-term exposure (via spines and teeth) and short-term exposure (via liver tissue). The findings were a wake-up call: Metropolitan surroundings, which are frequently portrayed as havens for wildlife amidst concrete jungles, are riddled with hazardous compounds.

Sources of Urban Pollution

The environmental pollutants detected in Hedgehogs come from various human activities and products. “Urban environments, where most people live today, contain many environmentally problematic substances proven harmful to health,” Hansson told reporters. These compounds are derived from construction materials, plastics, pesticides, air pollution, garbage, traffic, cars, and even contaminated soil. For example, old paint, industrial effluent, and automobile exhaust can all leach lead and other heavy metals into the soil. PAHs, frequently created by fossil fuel combustion, are byproducts of transportation and industrial activity. Phthalates and brominated flame retardants enter the environment through everyday goods such as plastic packaging, furniture, and electronics.

Hedgehogs, being insectivores, are especially vulnerable because they consume these toxins via their diet. Insects and invertebrates, which provide most of their food, can acquire pollutants from the soil and plants in which they live. As hedgehogs graze, they unintentionally create a living record of the contamination in their environment. This makes them an important indicator species, reflecting the health of the larger ecosystem and the risks it poses to other organisms, including people.

A Call for Increased Monitoring and Action

The findings highlight the critical need for additional environmental monitoring in metropolitan settings. Parks, gardens, and green places are frequently praised for their biodiversity, but this study shows they are far from perfect. “We must also reduce the risk of organisms being exposed to the chemicals in the materials and products we choose to use,” Hansson told the audience. She pushes for increased monitoring of soil and organisms in urban contexts and a broader cultural movement towards less usage of synthetic materials, chemicals, and plastics.

Individuals may choose eco-friendly items, use pesticides sparingly in gardening, and support pollution-reduction policies. On a bigger scale, cities may impose stricter industrial emissions rules, enhance waste management, and prioritise green infrastructure to reduce chemical runoff. The stakes are high: many of the contaminants found in hedgehogs, such as endocrine-disrupting phthalates, carcinogenic PAHs, and reproductive poisons like PCBs, are also known to affect human health.

The Uncertain Impact on Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs are red-listed in several parts of Europe, indicating they are already declining. The Lund study did not intentionally injure any animals; instead, it relied on carcasses for its studies. “Deliberately killing wild animals is unethical and should be avoided,” says Hansson. However, it is unclear how these pollutants affect hedgehogs. The effects of environmental toxins on animals are notoriously difficult to study because various species respond differently to chemical exposure.

What is certain, though, is cause for caution.“As hedgehogs are mammals just like us, it is worrying to find substances that we know are endocrine disruptors, carcinogenic, or interfere with human reproduction,” Dr. Hansson said. The similarities between hedgehogs and people are striking: if these pollutants accumulate in hedgehogs, they are likely to impact other organisms—including humans—living in the same settings. The study serves as a sobering reminder that the chemicals we release into the environment do not simply vanish; they accumulate in the bodies of species as small as hedgehogs and as massive as humans.

Moving Forward: Protecting Urban Ecosystems

The Lund University report is a loud cry for action. Urban landscapes must be reinvented as places where wildlife and humans can cohabit without the risk of hazardous exposure. We may lessen the consequences of urban pollution by lowering our reliance on dangerous chemicals and prioritising environmental monitoring. For hedgehogs, this may imply cleaner soils to graze in and safer green spaces to explore. For humans, it translates to healthier cities and a more sustainable future. With its spiky exterior and calm resilience, the modest hedgehog has shown us the hidden hazards of our urban environment; now, it is up to us to act on what we have learnt.
