A new study from the United States confirms that air pollution may raise infertility risk, significantly impacting the development of eggs, sperm, and embryos. In the past, it was unknown when harm occurred throughout the conception process or whether air pollution had a greater effect on males or women. However, by looking at almost 1,400 men and women having IVF, this study made it possible for researchers to unravel the impacts of air pollution on the development of sperm and eggs.
According to the study, the level of air pollution exposure experienced by fathers is just as alarming as that of mothers. The primary author, Audrey Gaskins of Emory University, emphasized the need for taking into account male preconception exposures since they affect fertility and may affect the health of children.

Key Pollutants and Their Effects on Reproductive Health
To determine contaminant exposure, researchers examined air quality data from fertilization clinics and individuals’ zip codes. They discovered that the largest correlations with decreased oocyte survival, fertilization, and embryo quality were identified in organic carbon and particulate matter. The Environmental Protection Agency is taking more stringent regulation measures because it has realized that particulate matter, which is created by diesel-powered automobiles, power plants, and smoke from wildfires, is more harmful than previously believed.
Exposure to organic carbon during IVF ovarian stimulation hampered folliculogenesis and spermatogenesis, two crucial phases in the production of eggs and sperm, and raised the risk of egg mortality. Smoke from wildfires is especially dangerous because it contains a lot of organic carbon. The results were also affected by the air quality within clinics; greater amounts of organic carbon on the day of oocyte thaw were associated with poorer survival rates, while higher levels of ozone decreased fertilization rates.

The significance of brief exposures during crucial windows in reproductive cycles is emphasized by the study. Researchers advise remaining home on days with heavy pollution, avoiding high-traffic locations, utilizing high-efficiency furnace filters, and installing HEPA indoor filtration systems to reduce hazards.
The results highlight the need for knowledge and preventive actions for those attempting to conceive, emphasizing how air pollution may raise infertility risk, especially in locations with high pollution levels, even if certain contaminants, such as nitrogen dioxide, exhibited no influence on fertility.
