Ethiopia has officially launched the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a project under construction since 2011 and now recognized as Africa’s largest hydroelectric facility.   • Cairo continues to demand a legally binding agreement to regulate reservoir filling, citing historic treaties that Ethiopia rejects.
  • Sudan has expressed concerns about water shortages but also acknowledges potential benefits, such as reduced flooding and access to cheaper electricity.

Mediation led by the African Union and supported at times by the United States has failed to secure an agreement.
