The most recent Asia-Pacific climate study from the Asian Development Bank presents a dire outlook for India’s economic future, emphasising the catastrophic economic effects of climate change stating: “Climate change could slash India’s GDP.” According to the report, rising sea levels and declining labour productivity are the leading causes of India’s potential startling 24.7% GDP decline by 2070.
This report is not just about climate change but a wake-up call for one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. India is one of the nations most impacted by the projected GDP loss in the Asia-Pacific area, where rising economies might collectively see their GDP decrease by 17.9% by 2070 under a high-emission scenario.

This report’s timing couldn’t be more crucial. These predictions imply that climate change may cause a significant setback for India, which is poised to become the third-largest economy in the world. Without immediate action, the country’s aspirations to become a developed nation by 2047 may face significant challenges.
However, what makes India vulnerable? Its demographics and geography hold the key to the solution. The rising sea level poses an imminent threat to India, which has more than 7,500 km of coastline. Major coastal cities like Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai could experience severe disruptions. In addition to being significant hubs for people, these cities are essential parts of India’s economy.

India’s recent pledges to renewable energy, such as its aggressive targets for solar power and electric vehicles, appear promising. But given the magnitude of the problem, a more forceful response is required.
The corporate sector must proactively incorporate climate resilience into its business strategies. Government policy must strike a balance between environmental preservation and economic growth. International collaboration will be crucial in technology transfer and climate finance.
